Once again, my friend is proven right ... The courts ARE holding

"The Judiciary branch is strong and WE. WILL. HOLD"

A few weeks ago, a dear old friend, a Republican-appointed federal judge, trying to console me during a moment of despair about the future of our country, said to me “The Judiciary branch is strong and will hold.” When I expressed skepticism, he leaned toward me, looked me dead in the eye, and said as firmly as he could without shouting: “We are strong and WE. WILL. HOLD.”

I assume that they thought that they would get a straight-up replacement for Scalia, although that might be more Brett "I like Beer" Kavanaugh

I'm so proud of Judge Sullivan and Judge Walton also, who I spent my formative legal career practising before.

Go Judge Sullivan! Go Judge Walton!

But pay off it will.

In 10 years, many of the Judges now holding the line will be retired if not buried. The barely-qualified 40 year old ideologues will be hitting their stride.

That is what I'm most skeptical about in terms of civil rights. Women with civil rights, especially bodily autonomy, are an historical aberration to them that has us going against nature by not being chained to a kitchen stove, constantly pregnant against our will.

Still, however much I despised Scalia, we have to give the old devil his due. When it counted for LGBTQ civil rights, he came down on the side of justice and overturned the sodomy laws in Texas, specifically, and the country, generally.

They will curtail civil liberties only when they conflict with corporate might, and even then it will likely be a mixed bag and will be unlikely to uphold the rights of women.
