(33,338 posts)Washington never set foot in this state. The citizenry figured they wouldn't get to be a state unless they had a "hook" that appealed to the East Coast.
Tahoma is the Salish name for Mt. Rainier, the most prominent mountain in the lower 48.

(37,364 posts)precisely because it isn't a state and doesn't have a governor. Statehood and a governor would mean that DC would have its own National Guard to command. Because it doesn't, this left him free to use units the federal government had control over at the time. This was as underhanded as slimy tricks come and you have to wonder which cabal put that one together. If it was military, we are screwed.
