Central Park "Karen" has lost her job

?s=20

Following our internal review of the incident in Central Park yesterday, we have made the decision to terminate the employee involved, effective immediately. We do not tolerate racism of any kind at Franklin Templeton.

Within minutes the cops had him surrounded in the lot with guns drawn and face in the pavement.

I have zero doubt in my mind that if this would have happened today that he would be dead.

If I recall, she didn't even receive any sort if official reprimand other than a slap on the wrist. It could have turned out to be a nightmare.

24. NYT: Woman Is Fired After Calling Police on Black Man in Central Park
Tue May 26, 2020, 03:10 PM
May 2020
...

Mr. Cooper, who works in communications and graduated from Harvard, according to his LinkedIn profile, included his account of the conversation that took place before he began filming.

First he asked her to leash her dog, he said. She refused.

“Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it,” he told her, according to his post.

Mr. Cooper, who is on the board of the New York City Audubon Society, then produced dog treats, which he explained, he carries because it forces owners to leash their dogs to prevent the animal from snacking.

“I pull out the dog treats I carry for just for such intransigence,” he wrote. “That’s when I started video recording with my iPhone, and when her inner Karen fully emerged and took a dark turn,” he said, using the name Karen, which has become slang for an entitled white woman.

Adding to the fractiousness of the exchange is a long history of tension between birders and dog walkers in Central Park, magnified by the fraught climate of the pandemic lockdown. At one point Ms. Cooper, wearing a face mask, lunges toward Mr. Cooper, a behavior that some who viewed the video have called an assault, because of the violation of social distancing that occurs.

“It was particularly a punch in the gut for a lot of people,” said Professor Katheryn Russell-Brown, the director of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. “It ties into and taps into a long history of white women in particular falsely accusing black men of crimes that leads to great harm.”

She does not show up, even though she was apparently a "Fixed Income Specialist". The fact that she doesn't show up even as a former employee is very curious. It is possible that she was not a holder of a Series 7 or any other license, but I find that kind of hard to believe as she was working for a firm that has been around since the 1940's.

I wanted to look her up to see if she had any infractions or compliance issues, but oh well.

It was a possible outcome of her irresponsible actions, but it didn't happen, thankfully.

Instead, she got called out, globally, and lost her dog and her job. Next she'll get arrested for filing a false report.

If there is a street fight between me and Justin Bieber, he is simply going to suffer far fewer serious consequences that I would suffer. That is why I don't get into street fights or do other stupid stuff that can land me, this nobody, in trouble.

Does she deserve sympathy now that she has lost a pet and her job? To answer that, first think about what could have happened if a cop was nearby and took her accusations seriously, a Black man that had binoculars and maybe other bird watching stuff could have been tazed or shot.

I still have mixed emotions about Internet Justice, like I do about using "Karen" as a derogatory term.

I agree with the man at the center of this incident:

"Chris Cooper told CBS2 the incident reflects a growing problem.

“It’s not just about her. She tapped into something that’s pervasive in our society that we all really need to address,” Chris Cooper said. “We need to start treating each other as ‘us’ rather than as ‘other.'”

Since being posted, Melody Cooper’s initial share of her brother’s video of the incident has been watched online more than 31 million times."

I know the "whypipple" term, or whatever it is, that refer to any White person is off-putting to me, I am AA.

One would hope that she works to understand how serious her behavior was.

Maybe she is stressed out from her job and was out blowing off stream while letting her dog run around. But even then she could have said lots of other things, like "Mister, I am really stressed right now, can you not bother me?" She chose to do something that could resulted in a person being seriously harmed, for that it is difficult for me to feel any sympathy for her.

Just think if a cop was in the area and rushed over right away and the outcome of that situation was injury or death of that innocent man. It saddens me just thinking about it. She was just pissed that a black man had the audacity to tell her to leash her mutt.

p.s. We all know she'll get a second chance and find a job pretty quick .

leash on before the police got there. She could have put it on when asked, and saved the poor dog a lot of grief. Poor thing was being strangled and she ignored him. Glad he has been taken from her. She should not have any animals, since she does not know how to treat them. Why is this not a hate crime? Causing all this because she was asked to do the correct thing. The consequences could have been life threatening, really.

Well, she didn't ignore him completely. When he started to yelp in response to her abuse, she quickly moved the phone down closer to the dog, so the dispatcher would hear the dog's distress more clearly.

Thank you for posting mcar. I took a break from the news this weekend to do a bunch of yard work.

And, good grief DUers...if you already knew about this prior to the OP, why click and leave the snark? Nobody has that coming.

I don't think anyone knew she'd been fired. The reporting before this was that she was suspended.

Yeah, the snark was unnecessary, especially given the issue at hand.

She's mentally unstable, clearly. It's not her racism alone.

Something triggered Karen. Her reaction to the man's request that she follow the posted rules was bizarre. It was as if she was seeing a different event unfolding than the one we witnessed in the video.

Years ago there were two elderly women who shared a house on my block. One was quiet and withdrawn the other was paranoid and vocal. Her insurance agent -- who was also my family's insurance agent -- told us that he was driving to a client's house in the rain and happened to see her walking and getting wet despite her umbrella. So he pulled over and offered her a ride, calling to her by name and saying "It's me, Sam Smith (not his real name), your insurance agent. Can I give you a lift?" Her reaction was an angry panic: "Go away, you animal," he said she screamed at him. "I'm not some common pick-up!"

She called the police! This we knew because we had seen a squad car outside of her house on the very afternoon Sam was talking about. My Dad told him about the squad car and Sam laughed and said something about how weird his business could be. (She maintained the client-agent relationship and apparently never raised the issue with him!)

But the Point is, the old lady didn't see a man, a familiar face, offering her a chance to get out of the rain. She reacted because she apparently feared a sexual assault. Why? It certainly wasn't her physical allurements. She was just a coat of green make-up away from being the spitting image of the Witch of the West, only with a deeper scowl. Maybe she'd suffered an attack earlier in life, or maybe her sister or some other family member had and she was traumatized by it.

Whatever it was it made it impossible for her interpret what was actually happening when her insurance agent offered her a ride.

That's what I thought of when I watched "Karen" making a lying, racist, fool of herself as she was videoed.

I meant to describe a woman I remember as mean and scowling who may, in fact, have revealed the reason for her means and her "resting" scowl by her inability to see a familiar face and to understand a kind gesture, instead going into into a panic and a rage.

That, in fact, is what I thought I had done. Sorry. If you misunderstood my intent, I obviously didn't make myself clear.

It would be nice to hear from people that know her or worked with her. The pressure of the situation that we are in could have gotten to her, but even that doesn't make what she did tolerable.

Maybe she has been sexually assaulted in her life. Maybe she is currently being sexually assaulted by some one in her life. Maybe when he said she wouldn’t like what he did to her she took it in a way that made sense to her, but wasn’t what he intended at all.

Interesting how the “you won’t like what I do” part of the story gets left out. I’m not saying he meant to threaten her, but some women would definitely take that as a threat coming from a man.

while black/brown males pay the ultimate price far too often.

Many minorities, gay people, and males have experienced horrible trauma/abuse in life without anyone even pretending to give a shit.

She probably does need some sort of treatment or therapy but it should never be an excuse to hurt others. White paranoia is a real problem that white individuals need to accept and fix.

I've had a white girlfriend who turned out to be a deeply oppressed professional victim of the patriarchy who definitely needed mental health treatment, so I'm familiar with the type of person who likes to think of herself as a victim while actually being an abuser to others. Those are 2 separate issues. White privilege is a third issue that has tremendous consequences and instant gratification. I love white women and have dated many. They've mostly been kind decent people except for this one.
