As if we worry about the virus, now in Midland,Mi. we have a dam failure that dis places at lest 12.000 people with 9 feet of water.
our Gov. has a lot to tend to without this situation keep everyone safe as can be expected,as people are moved to shelters in schools,,no 6 feet apart there,to be sure

The Tittabawasee River flows into the Saginaw River south of Saginaw then up through Bay City.
If the Sanford Dam breaches as expected, it will be ugly for Midland, Saginaw and Bay City.

(3,947 posts)2 local dams, consecutive on the Tittabawassee River have failed
Local terrain flat, water will spread in floodplain, but much wider area will be affected than normal.
Town just recovered from major flood in 2017.
Several upper-middle class neighborhoods are going to lose huge property value due to repetitive floods.
Concern about water mobilizing toxics from Dow Chemical plant here.
Dams are 100 years old, so really unprecedented situation, many unknowns.
Two local lakes with many waterfront (expensive) homes will be drained.
Many residents will be in shelters- social distancing impossible.
Unclear what happens next.
I am dry and safe, sheltering relatives.

(63,221 posts)I hope there are no casualties. What a nightmare! If our government had been focusing on reinforcing our infrastructure instead of giving tax breaks to the rich and corporations, things like this would not be happening. I hope we don't keep hearing about more disasters like this, but unfortunately I think we will.
This administration could give a damn about strengthening this country and putting people to work. It's all about funneling money up to the 1% at the expense of the rest of us, literally and figuratively. We will continue to suffer until we get someone in office who actually cares about all Americans and protecting them from disasters such as this.

(2,949 posts)Per reports my location is not in immediate threat. Saginaw river area, but far enough away from both rivers to be safe. Daughter and grandchildren are on the other side of raging river she has been getting alerts on phone all night. I think she is far enough away to be safe. However all bridges between her house and mine are closed. But then we haven't visited since stay in place went in effect.
Ah the irony these folks are under stay in place and evacuate orders on the same day.

(34,447 posts)I hope everyone gets out safely. We've had a shitload of rain here in southern Michigan. We've got minor flooding in the Lansing area, but the Midland area really got dumped on. They're saying they got 7" in 48 hours; we only got 4."
