City of Stillwater drops mask requirement after businesses threatened

An emergency declaration that took effect at midnight Friday has been amended after businesses reported their employees were being threatened with physical harm by members of the public who didn't want to wear face coverings.

The changes make the wearing of face coverings in retail establishments optional rather than mandatory for customers, although it is still strongly recommended, employees are still required to wear them and the proclamation is extended to 11:59 p.m. May 31.

City Manager Norman McNickle issued a statement about the change and the controversy surrounding mandatory face coverings: “In the short time beginning on May 1, 2020, that face coverings have been required for entry into stores/restaurants, store employees have been threatened with physical violence and showered with verbal abuse. In addition, there has been one threat of violence using a firearm. This has occurred in three short hours and in the face of clear medical evidence that face coverings helps contain the spread of COVID-19.

“Many of those with objections cite the mistaken belief the requirement is unconstitutional, and under their theory, one cannot be forced to wear a mask. No law or court supports this view. In fact, a recent Federal lawsuit against Guthrie’s face covering order was fully dismissed by the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.

This has been going on for some time. They use to resort to their backwater meetings to bully, and spread their story. Now it's all in the open. We're at next level.

They couldn’t possibly not have as at each other’s throats. It just couldn’t be.

This has nothing to do with freedom or rights. That is pure bullshit. This is about flicking their ears until they get angry. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere the manipulators (on the right) aren’t placing side bets on what kind of stupid shit they can get at least one person to do. Like pushing a park ranger in a lake in Austin Texas.

Soooo, wearing masks for public health and safety is optional? Then serving these cob idiot biological terrorism,Orissa should be optional as well.

Should each establishment have a person at the front door with medical waivers for the unmasked? And perhaps statements saying they will be legally liable for all medical care costs for any patrons or employees who become ill? Let them put their money where their beliefs are.

You don't have to wear a mask, but if you don't you can't shop here.

This is what every store owner should put on their entrance door.
If you don't like it, you don't have to shop here.

I live in Stillwater and know Norm McNickle. He was the former chief of police here and a bit of a hard guy when it comes to law and order. I am surprised that he has capitulated on this matter. I do know that people have threaten the store staff with physical and gun violence. We are the reddest of states and the reddest of neck. It is the arrogance that they see from Trump and Pence that they are displaying. My wife just got back from where else but Walmart and told me a woman who did not want to enter the store through the entrance door because she would have to walk around a barrier. She continued to ask “why” to the young men staff requesting her to follow the directions. The arrogance of challenging simple directions. Also there were people not wearing masks there this morning. The staff, however, were masked finally. I will give the city council my 2 cents on this you can be assured.

they are making the case that it is OK to threaten others to get their way.

This emboldens other idiots to act the same way and will only lead to more unlawfulness as these fools think they can get away with anything.

Living in an open carry state, this makes me fearful.

Can I talk back to an idiot if they confront me in a grocery store for wearing masks and gloves? Will they pull a gun on me?

It is time to arrest and detain these idiots for violating the rules.

Everyday, I feel more doomed than the last...smdh
