Could it be...

That tRump wants to prolong the Covid 19 crisis or even make it worse until November so that he can declare a full-blown national emergency, call out the National Guard and cancel the election indefinitely?

Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

He will take credit for any advances or successes and blame Governors and others for failures.

This has been discussed repeatedly here. Congress sets the date for presidential elections, so it would take an act of Congress to change it; and the individual states control their election procedures. If no election were held as scheduled, Trump's and Pence's terms would expire automatically on 1/20/21.

It only prescribes the procedures for the electoral college. By Act of Congress in 1845, election day was set as "the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November" or "the first Tuesday after November 1". https://www.loc.gov/law/help/statutes-at-large/28th-congress/session-2/c28s2ch1.pdf It hasn't been changed since.

My mistake it says congress set it by law so they would have to change that law and I would suppose both houses would have to agree

I don't mean to be rude or snarky but many people have proposed this or other scenarios with Trump cancelling the elections. Trump has NO authority to cancel elections. Elections are run by the states.

Yes Trump has the power to declare a national emergency. Perhaps, he can declare martial law, but that would not necessarily stop any elections. States would still be able to propose vote by mail or some other way of voting.

Trump has no authority over the elections. If he tried to cancel there would be a NATIONAL Uproar.

But it will be designed (somewhat) chaos. In order to hide the theft. He is very proud of his well used tactic, Throwing flak. He plans to make a mess of it, then steal it.
