We all know Trump has not, but how about your governor? I think Gov. Wolf in PA has been great. Issued non-essential business closures very early, which became early stay at home orders in the worst spots in the state. Expanded the stay at home order when needed. I definitely think PA would be worse without his actions.

He closed things down before the outbreak was bad, he has worked with science and business to get the supplies needed and has listened to Dr Acton's advice. We have a much flatter curve in Ohio than we would have otherwise. Our legislature is dysfunctional at the best of times, which is why the postponement of the primary was as messy as it was, but I'll give the gov props for overall calm and rational leadership.

Everyone here seems to be taking this deadly seriously. Almost all the restaurants are open but for Delivery and Pick Up ONLY, so lots of good choices. Parks open to residents only for purpose of exercise. All tables and benches sanitized daily. Schools closed, all students were given computers and online classes are in full swing. All kids up to age 18 can come to the high school daily to pick up boxed breakfasts and lunches, or arrangements can be made for delivery. This way cafeteria staff and transportation staff can continue to work. Sanitation vehicles continue to run as scheduled.

I'm not happy that this week he added gun stores to the list of "essential" businesses. Personally, I don't think in these crazy times both alcohol AND guns are essential... a dangerous mix IMO. Thankfully, it's not easy to legally purchase a gun in this state so I guess in practice it's not a big deal here, but I don't like the precedent.

(15,294 posts)He and our Secy of Health monitored the outbreaks and closed counties when necessary. He closed the schools pretty early on. Wolf walked a fine line between closing the state and individual counties until yesterday when we all got a stay-at-home order.
Wolf's a pretty quiet, understated guy, but he and Murphy in NJ worked with the PA-based baseball uniform manufacturer to get them to switch to making PPE and masks. The state seems to be in pretty good shape with respect to supplies and hospital beds. There must be a lot going on behind the scenes, but Wolf only speaks when he has something important to say.
Peduto should get credit for shutting down the city of Pittsburgh early on even when there were no or few cv19 cases in western PA. That's probably a big reason there's not as much virus in the area, but it seemed like overreaction at the time.
Oh, and P&G has a big plant in the NE corner of the state that makes TP, paper towels and other consumer goods. But, Just Born, the company that makes "Peeps" is closed, so the "peeps" in the stores are the only ones available for awhile.

(54,483 posts)He is somewhat saddled by the inability of the federal government to secure test kits. More are more tests are showing up, but you still get the usual bureaucratic runaround. Call your GP or lung internist. They tell you to call the health department. The health Department tells you to contact your GP or lung internist.
Laschet means well, but he can't change Germany overnight any more than anyone else. At least the people here are following the edict closely for the most part, and the number of newly found infections is modest compared to what's going on down south in Italy or Spain.
treestar
(82,383 posts)and in order. Do you find that to be generally true or false?
DFW
(54,483 posts)They drown in their rules and bureaucracy. They have more "civil servants" (too often they are neither) than they need (not as bad as France, granted), and it gets in the way of things. Europeans love their rules, and most bureaucrats spend their time making them up with no clue as to whether or not they are practical, workable or people-friendly.
Don't get me wrong, the Nazi era is long past, and plenty of officials are friendly enough, but they are famously "stur" which is a word that means a combination of "stubborn" and "inflexible." If they decide your face is green, only a dreaded admonishment from a higher-ranking official will change that.
Case in point: one election day here, about 30 years ago, my wife went to the polling place to cast her vote. I didn't have my residence here yet. She was told she couldn't vote here because she lived in München (Munich). She said that was ridiculous, because she had never lived in München or anywhere near there. They kept refusing to let her vote, and kept insisting she lived in München.
Finally she got an idea, and told them to look up our two daughters, aged 3 and 5 (around there). Sure enough, our daughters were properly registered as living here in our town near Düsseldorf. She then said she would call the police so they could have her arrested for child abandonment (according to the voting official), or else let her vote. Terrified of public ridicule (the press was there), as are all incompetent public officials, they let her cast a provisional ballot and told her to get her "residence issue" sorted out at city hall the next day. Voting here is on a Sunday, so City Hall wasn't open.
She went there the next day, but were either unwilling or incapable (or, more likely, a combination of both) of erasing her fictitious residence in München. They DID agree to transfer her residence to our town, but at some fictitious time in the past, she had moved to München, and that's all there is to it.
Another example--in our town, they are always trying to improve the streets and keep them in a safe state of repair. BUT--the never think out the consequences to traffic or the businesses on the streets affected, never announce when the construction work is done, and if they haven't been specifically instructed to do so, neglect to build or even maintain bicycle paths which are often extra lanes on the side of German streets. Sometimes bicycle lanes just end in the middle of busy streets because no specific instructions were given to build them.
The Germans are only too aware of this, and often mock it themselves. Years ago, there was a film here called "Der Zubringer." It means access road or on-ramp, and applies to access to highways or an Autobahn. In the film, someone had the idea to spend millions of public money on a "Zubringer" to a planned Autobahn. They figured they'd get ahead of the game and build it first. One town bureaucrat, the only guy in town with common sense or a conscience, protested that they should wait until construction for the planned Autobahn had begun, because if it were canceled, they would have built their access road for nothing (and to nowhere). He was overruled as being far too cautious, and the town went and built their access ramp, costing millions.
The planned Autobahn was indeed canceled, but the access ramp was already built, and they had a big opening ceremony with champagne for this huge access ramp that ended in the middle of a field somewhere. The guy had, in the meantime, thrown in the towel trying to reform the system, and was promoted for his acquiescence. As soon as the expensive and useless Zubringer was built and celebrated, he immediately announced he was leaving for a month's vacation, and wished his department great success in his absence.
The only comment my wife had was how accurately it reflected German bureaucracy. She is a social worker, and ran into roadblocks all the time, put up by clueless bureaucrats in the city government, at that time run by a coalition of Social Democrats and Communists. She worked (at the time) for the youth center in town, and they once wanted to put on a concert of a local band. The town government went ballistic--not for any safety violations or loudness, but because the youth center didn't get approval for the shape and form of the admission stickers.
It is not universal, but it is often the case that Germans are more concerned making rules and getting them followed than whether or not those rules serve any purpose or are in the least practical. It is the only country I know of with an "Ordnungsamt" in every town. Roughly translated, it means "Department of Order." Sometimes, they do serve useful purposes, taken care of by other parts of a city government in other countries, but sometimes they are literally there to enforce useless rules thought up by useless bureaucrats. The only hope is that in Germany, as with France, there are no greater critics of the system than the Germans, themselves.
treestar
(82,383 posts)Bureaucrats are bureaucrats wherever they are!
DFW
(54,483 posts)In Germany, they are all-powerful, and can't be fired. They have their jobs for life, unless they murder their mothers on live TV (unlike Trump). But barring that, it is just about impossible to fire them, no matter how horrible they are.
Here in Germany, teachers also belong to that category of unfireable. My daughter had a horrible math teacher here in Düsseldorf who failed 90% of her class. They complained that they couldn't understand what she was saying. She said they were just of "the wrong age to be able to absorb math." She stayed, they suffered.
She then spent a semester "abroad" of high school in Dallas, and was put into a math class with a similar problem. The kids all failed their first test, and complained the teacher was incapable of explaining anything. The teacher was gone within a week, replaced by someone who managed to teach the students what they needed to know. That is the essential difference between the two systems. In most of Europe, if you have "civil servant" status (in Germany, Beamter; in France, fonctionnaire), you never have to suffer consequences for doing things wrong, or doing them badly. You are there for life.

Our numbers are not too bad - considering other states. We have 363 reported cases and 6 deaths. Up until a few days ago, my county - Torrance - had no reported cases. Now, we have 3. We have one reported case in the closest town to me - a town of around 800 people where everyone knows everyone and who has the virus. But - the mayor of our town is so on this. He is on Facebook and Zoom almost every evening informing people about the numbers & what our town is doing. Plus he takes questions live.
Everyone loves him. He is a young Hispanic Dem . The town is probably half Dem and half Republican. His mom fosters/ adopted quite a few young children and at events he always has a gang of littles with him that he refers to as his brothers and sisters. (10,885 posts)Do you find there's any regret that Stacey Abrams isn't in the State House? I'd imagine it would be the state-sized version of U.S. Democrats mourning Hillary's loss.

(34,136 posts)has done a good job in spite of one of the most combative legislatures around. She keeps her head to the work and pushes on. This is one governor I know will not stop until all means of protection are used and even then she will keep working. I cannot imagine what would have happened here with Brownback but I know where we would be if she had not defeated Kobach. I feel very fortunate to have her right where she is.
She is doing well and without any grandstanding.

(82,383 posts)The state is permissive about who is essential (lawyers are essential, lol!) and construction work is essential. Real estate agents can still show houses, so long as they don't host an open house. So I think he is protecting the economy (he's a Democrat). I think perhaps the hospitals are not overwhelmed at this point. This is Delaware, which has around 950,000 total population, and there are 263 cases. There are like 2 big hospitals and I haven't been hearing that they are having any problems.

(4,529 posts)After telling people they should stay home and restaurants they should close, he made the Nt news for taking his family out to dinner. Then he scheduled a state-wide day of prayer. That tells you all you need to know.

(377 posts)Gov. Polis and Mayor Hancock have done a great job. They reacted in a timely manner, have been transparent, and have played the political minefield with the likes of Ken Buck marvelously. Polis would make a fine president one day.
Inslee, Whitmer Newsome, Polis, Cuomo, to name a few have been great leaders. As for Republicans I will admit that Dewine, while still being wrong on just about everything, still seemed to try to get ahead of this as well. Heck, I think Gavin Newsom deserves major props. California has such a large population, so many cities, and such high density yet, have managed to keep their cases low. Even while they are a completely global society with so many maintaining an international presence in all aspects of their lives.

(107 posts)Im grateful beyond words to have Phil Murphy right now, and his coordination with the governors around us has been stellar. If I were the praying kind Id be thanking the gods daily were not going through this with Chris Christie or his ilk. Murphy is the best NJ governor in my lifetime.

(31,261 posts)DeScum, not remotely close. Fortunately the AG Comish is an elected state official with her own domain of responsibility and resources, she has deployed those well. Her name is Nikki Fried, remember that name because you will likely hear it a lot in the future, she is very young, an excellent leader and seems to surround herself with very capable staff.

(3,370 posts)He's been doing a great job, but there was an aggressive order for rent and eviction freezes. Post-poning eviction filing isn't enough. We have a GOP heavy legislature here and I am happy that we haven't had much issue. I wish he was shutting down a bit more rather than county by county, but I feel like he's been rolling things out slower so as not to overwhelm.
I appreciate that he shut down MontCo fairly quickly as that county was the epicenter of cases in the state and one of the school districts was being stubborn about shutting down despite possible exposures in a few schools.

(6,256 posts)He's done a surprisingly good job. He closed the schools before the first case was diagnosed in the state. He gives nearly daily updates, with real information from health scientists and leaders of the National Guard. We were one of the early states to set up the stay at home rule. He's been a lousy governor in general (a bit of a billionaire grifter!) but he has actually done the right thing during the pandemic.
If he'd only stop the reelection commercials featuring Trump!

(24,452 posts)As far as I can tell. At least, I haven't heard any hardcore criticism of his handling so far. He holds near-daily briefings which are MUCH easier to get through than Trump's. Him trying to take the opportunity to ban abortions (and he's never struck me as particularly hardcore anti-choice) hit a sour note with me though.
Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.
