Lawmakers, tax policy experts and advocates for retirees are outraged over new IRS guidance that indicates seniors will need to file tax returns to receive their coronavirus checks.
The $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief bill President Trump signed into law last week lets the IRS look at Social Security benefit statements in order to give people their rebate checks if they haven't filed 2018 or 2019 tax returns.

Lawmakers and groups are now pressing the administration to find a way for Social Security beneficiaries to automatically receive their payments so that they don't face any extra burdens.
We strongly urge you to ensure that economic stimulus payments are automatically sent to vulnerable seniors and individuals who experience disabilities, without these individuals needing to file a tax return, more than three dozen Democratic senators, led by Sens. Maggie Hassan(N.H.) and Sherrod Brown (Ohio), wrote in a letter Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul.

Thank you Democratic Senators! We just don't need more stress in our life.

(20,878 posts)Go go along with the whole thing until the end.
STOP.
Do not submit it via efile.
If you do it takes you to file for the state, etc. etc.
Easiest thing to do is this:
Print it out, sign and date it (either single or joint) and mail it to your IRS. Keep a copy of the signed form for yourself as proof that you filed.
Google your location to find out where to mail it to as far as the IRS goes.
If you file and are on SS you'll get the $1200.00 or $2400.00 this way!
It does not long if you have the basic information they want.

(83,898 posts)I don't file as I am only on SS and don't make enough to do so.
They want us to jump through a few more hoops. It is not like they don't know we exist as I get my monthly check, direct deposit from SS.

(67,782 posts)...but it was a relief to get it over and done with. I don't care, but it looks like we may be among the first to get the direct deposit.
I spoke to my wife yesterday, told her that I want to give most of it to our local food bank. I expected resistance (she can be a tightwad!!!) and was so happy that she agreed.
To anyone who can afford it, look into it for bona fide organizations, but please give to feed the poor. In our area $100 feeds a person for several months. To me, feeding the poor is one of the most important things we can do these days.

I'm really grateful for this.. I'll take his damn blood money and tell him to FO!
Mahalo, she! I got this news bc of your OP.
He can FO along with his team. I hope they all rot in hell.
I am relieved. The money will help and I plan to donate some to the food pantry my mom worked at for years.
PS...My moms friend, her daughter had a box of masks at home that she used for her work. She gave them to her mom to give to my niece, they ran out. I love these people.

(22,270 posts)with my daughter and her husband. They are both self employed but they have no payroll. He has a gym with subscriptions and she is a tattoo artist. They also have an 8 month old daughter. I am hoping they do no have to go through a bunch of flaming hoops to get this $$ they so badly need.
Neither one of them can work now; it's a nightmare. At least they are in his parents' house so they do not have living expenses.

I'm shocked it has already been processed and direct-deposited.
However, we got $2232, which is $168 less than the $2400 they're touting.
EDIT: I mistook my usual monthly Social Security direct deposit for the $2400 we'll be getting. Sorry!
