(13,433 posts)Until he was inaugurated it was all theoretical, and even the damage he was doing was arguable as worst in our history (especially with the feedback waves of Bush 2s failures continuing to reverberate), but Trumps initial failures to respond and how hes performing now have quickly cemented him as the worst in our history, and its not a photo finish.

(3,557 posts)That being said, he is s certainly doing a seriously shitty job. As of today, the pandemic has only recently started and the economy has only began to slip. We dont know truly how bad things will get.
So far, bush 43 has my vote for the worst. He started wars and oversaw the destruction of the economy in 2008. However, Im thinking trump will soon surpass that level of shittyness.
It did take bush-43 8 years to totally fuck things up as bad as he did. Trump might surpass him in 4.

(9,109 posts)I used to think that James Buchanan, a President who did little but enable slave-catchers and then allowed the southern states to secede without going to the bother of destroying war materiel in places that then joined the Confederacy, was the worst, followed by George W. Bush, but Donald Trump now beats both of them.
===
As an aside, the Republican Party bookended the Obama Presidency with TWO horrible Presidents, and the second one was even worst than the first. What does this say about the Republican Party as a whole?

(2,212 posts)If there has ever been a president with such serious personality flaws as this one, I don't know of him. Chief among them: pathological lying; lack of empathy; narcissism; racism; lack of education generally and about American democracy in particular; philandering; authoritarian tendencies.
Yes, we've had some very bad presidents in our past, but I think it's realistic to appraise Donald J. Trump as the worst of all time.
But focusing on just how bad Trump is risks missing the larger issues. He's a symptom of underlying ills in this nation. The political system is not working well for the average American, and that has created resentment, a desire for disruption, and a willingness to listen to demagogues. If the underlying conditions are not improved, we might find ourselves with a president even worse than Trump. Don't think it can't happen.

(115,606 posts)Late at night, in the bowels of the White House, a spectral meeting is taking place. It's the weekly poker game of the ghosts of James Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, Warren Harding and Richard Nixon. The Worst Presidents Ever.
"What do you think, gentlemen?" said Buchanan as he cut the cards. "Do you think this Trump will be joining us, soon...?"
"I expect he'll join the club pretty soon, what with this bug that's going around," said Harding. "I've been getting grief now for almost a hundred years for my corrupt administration but we were a bunch of Boy Scouts compared to him. It'll be nice to finally move down a couple notches on the Worst Presidents list."
Nixon lit an ectoplasmic cigar. "You know, when I lived here I had a few problems. It's nice to come back and haunt the place but I hate to see it occupied by such a bunch of grifters. I never made a nickel off Watergate."
Buchanan dealt the cards. Pierce looked at his hand and shook his head. "I never had much luck with this game when I was alive, either."
"I got impeached," Johnson said. "I didn't deserve it and I was acquitted. Trump got impeached, too, but he committed more impeachable offenses than I ever even thought of. Hell, all I did was try to fire Edwin Stanton. I kind of fucked up Reconstruction, too, but..."
"You were a terrible bigot," said Nixon.
"You should talk," Johnson replied. "I heard those tapes of yours. I wish I'd had tapes in those days."
Fillmore sipped his spectral whiskey and remarked, "Harry Truman once said I was a 'weak, trivial thumb-twaddler who would do nothing to offend anyone.' I'm still not speaking to him. But at least I was never a fucking Russian spy."
Nixon said, "We were all shitty presidents. But when Trump arrives I don't think I want him in this game. He'll cheat, for one thing. And he's an asshole."
Buchanan said, "Not only that, but he'll bluster and brag. The man has no class. I don't mind if that little Bush fella joins us someday; he's dumb and he's probably a terrible poker player but he knows some good jokes. By the way, Dick, you were an asshole, too."
"When Bush comes maybe I'll get to win once in awhile," said Pierce.
"I'm no longer considered the worst president in American history. Trump's got me beat by a country mile." said Buchanan.
"I fold," said Pierce. "And I don't think you'll have to wait until Trump is dead. He's already turned out to be way worse than any of us ever were. We just sucked. He's....."
Nixon said, "That fat fucker is a disgrace even to us, the worst presidents ever. I don't want to wait until he's dead and I don't want to play poker with him when he is. Let's haunt him."
Harding replied, "Brilliant! Let's do it!" He tried to fist-bump Nixon, but as he was made of ectoplasm the gesture was futile.
And so the ghosts of the Worst American Presidents started appearing to Trump in various places in the White House. Pierce tried to moon him but because he was transparent the gesture was not very effective. Although they enjoyed slipping through walls and making obscene gestures, after awhile the ghosts gave up and went back to their poker game because Trump was going mad without their help.

(12,799 posts)... demonstrable by any measure. Facts and statistics bear it out.
And even if you're someone who rates a President's performance on how well the stock market is doing... Well, I've got news for you. The REST of a President's performance, or lack thereof, has an impact on that, too.

(63,892 posts)He echoed some sentiments of Reagan's but I don't think he believed them. I know some of the elements jibe but Trump voices them just to get votes of the senseless, bigoted, angry people in our country. Having a black president drove them over the edge and Trump leaped on their hatred bandwagon.
I detested Reagan and thought Bush was the worst president we ever had. Now I see two things: bigotry can get in the bloodstream of some people and the Electoral College is the enemy of the people and must be changed. Both are dangers to our democracy.

(889 posts)George W. Bush is the worst president in U.S. history. His illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
Who knows what buffoonery Trump is capable of in his remaining months in office. But he is not a war criminal. His legacy will fade in time. Bush is a war criminal. Fifty years from now people will still be crying over dead relatives who were killed in Iraq.

(18,117 posts)And President Trump? Lets say that, according to the 170 members of the American Political Science Associations Presidents and Executive Politics section who filled out our survey, he has at least three years to improve on an ignominious debut.
James Buchanan, who was at the helm as the United States careened into civil war, was dislodged from his position as our nations worst president by our current president, Trump.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/02/19/opinion/how-does-trump-stack-up-against-the-best-and-worst-presidents.html
So 170 of the top political scientists list trump as 44th out of 44 (Chester Arthur was pres twice). This was in 2018, but I don't think he's done anything to improve that score.
