(Pardon the *******'s, I just got spanked by DU Censors).......So then, if DEMs have the majority of voters in Florida, maybe some Florida Dem could explain how THESE despicable Republicans keep getting elected constantly time after time after time after time down there?????
Have Florida Republicans made permanent the voting machines they rigged in 2000 or what?????????
Seriously, just asking a legitimately curious question......
On another voting machine question LN, have you ever wondered, especially after the 2000 and 2004 election's voting machine corruption/scandal, why Obama, did not once mention the deepest threat to our Democracy, or trying to straighten it out, or sending his FBI and DOJ after the issue with a vengeance???
Sorry, but there are so many things we all should be wondering about and publicizing each and every day in the media....

(7,430 posts)virus grabbing onto anyone and anything.
This is incredibly short sighted and, to be honest, STUPID.
If you're under 65, you should be doing what the elders are doing. The virus infects those under 65 and will travel with them to other hosts, including elderly PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS, and their caretakers.
Florida is on track to be worse than NYC in terms of infected citizens and those who die from the virus. When the funeral processions clog the streets, De Santis won't attend any of them.

(14,124 posts)Medical history thus far indicates the elderly,... those over 65, are more at risk from the virus. The immune system diminishes as people get old, not as strong a reaction to stop invading virus. The weakened immune system makes it much harder to combat the invasion.
Also to,.. the elderly often have other medical problems and issues that they have to deal with and in the middle of the healing process to address these issues.
This can also tax and weaken the immune system. These are call co-morbidities.
co·mor·bid·i·ty
/ˌkōmôrˈbidədē/
noun
the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a patient.
The presents of other comorbidities in addition to the fighting off the virus often overwhelms the elderly and this can be a cause of their death.
The incidence of mortality is very high in the elderly when they contract flu, pneumonia, or a nuevo virus.
Thus the medical alert/warnings.

(31,261 posts)But, I tell you one thing, that Publix looked well stocked, lots of luncheon meat (in a section seperate from fresh meat, sausages and hotdogs). I saw several really nice Boar's Head smoked hams and cheeses and all types of luncheon meats. The market also had plenty of bread, all shelves loaded, I bought a package of bagels. It also had plenty of veggies and fruit, I bought broccoli, sweet corn and red sweet peppers. It also had plenty of fruit of all type and nuts. I really was impressed with how well stocked it was, given that I was there on a Saturday at around 2pm.
The fresh meat cooler is around 70 feet long and about 4 feet front to back. There were people all up and down it getting stuff as best I could tell from a distance. There were other people waiting to get to the meat cooler. In all, it was a mass of people that I didn't want to walk through.
Based from how well stocked the rest of the store was, I would guess that the meat cooler was also, all the people at it and waiting nearby would imply that. But like I said, when I saw that crowd, I looked for another path to the register and found it by walking back pass the luncheon meat cooler then around the front of the store toward the registers.

(8,361 posts)Department of Health (DoH) officials have identified five cases of community spread of the COVID-19 virus inside The Villages.
A report from POLITICO highlighted the findings by Sumter County DoH officials. The sprawling retirement community is partially located inside Sumter and crosses into Lake and Marion counties as well.
A serious outbreak inside the community could have devastating effects. Most who show symptoms from the virus develop a fever or cough and may have trouble breathing, though they do recover.
But older individuals and those with underlying health risks are susceptible to developing more severe symptoms.
Through Saturday morning, 54 Floridians have died after contracting the novel coronavirus. Nearly 90% of those deaths were individuals aged 65 or older.

Generation Pickleball: Welcome to Floridas Political Tomorrowland
Republicans political future looks a lot like this vibrant, fast-growing, Trump-friendly retirement community outside of Orlando.
https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/06/18/florida-senior-citizens-vote-election-2018-218758
The Villages is Americas largest retirement community, a carefully planned, meticulously groomed dreamscape of gated subdivisions, wall-to-wall golf courses, adult-only pools and old-fashioned town squares. Its advertised as Floridas friendliest hometown, and its supposed to evoke a bygone era of traditional values when Americans knew their neighbors, respected their elders and followed the rules. It has the highest concentration of military veterans of any metropolitan area without a military base. It has strict regulations enforcing the uniformity of homes (no second stories, no bright colors, no modern flourishes) as well as the people living in them (no families with children, except to visit). And it is Trump country, a reliably Republican, vocally patriotic, almost entirely white enclave that gave the president nearly 70 percent of the vote.
Older voters are Americas most reliable voters, which is why baby-boomer boomtowns like The Villages represent the most significant threat to a potential Democratic wave in Florida in 2018and the most significant source of Republican optimism for many years to come. Because while the Villages may look like the past, with its retro architecture and gray-haired demographics, it sells like the future. This master-planned paradise an hour northwest of Disney World has been the fastest-growing metro area in the United States in four of the past five years. And as the baby boom generation continues to retire, The Villages is continuing to expand into nearby cattle pastures, luring more pensioners to this fantasyland in the sunshine, gradually swinging Americas largest swing state to the right.
Trump supporters who get the most media attention tend to be economically anxious laborers in economically depressed factory towns. But in Florida, economically secure retirement meccas like The Villages are the real reason Trump won in 2016and why the states Republicans, who have controlled Tallahassee for two decades, think they can avoid a blue wave in 2018 and help reelect Trump in 2020. For all the hype about Puerto Ricans moving to the Sunshine State after Hurricane Maria, or high school students like the Parkland gun control activists turning 18 and registering to vote, any Democratic surge could be offset by the migration of Republican-leaning seniors who like Floridas balmy weather and lack of income tax. If midterm elections typically play out as judgments on the presidency, then Floridas upcoming contests will be a race between the usual laws of political gravity and the states demographic destiny: Trump remains unpopular with younger voters, and Democrats have already flipped four Florida legislative seats in low-profile special elections this year, but the older voters who are most likely to vote in the midterms are increasingly likely to move to Florida and support the president.
It makes sense that theyre coming to The Villages, because this leisure-class Sun Belt oasis is a lot more pleasant than the dying working-class Rust Belt towns that journalists usually visit on Trump-voter safaris. It feels like a 40-square-mile cruise ship, or a college campus without required classes. It has enough golf courses to play a different one every week of the year, and more than 100 miles of golf cart trails that keep traffic congestion to a minimum. Its the pickleball capital of America, appropriate considering that the badminton-meets-tennis-ish paddle game has become Americas fastest-growing sport. It has 3,000 clubs that keep 125,000 Villagers busy doing everything from belly dancing to astrology, water aerobics to water skiing, karaoke to quilting. It isnt exactly luxurious, but its comfortable with a median home price above $250,000; though a new POLITICO/AARP poll finds plenty of concern elsewhere in Florida, the only real economic anxiety for most Villagers is the state of their investment portfolios, which are thriving in the Trump era. At a meeting of the Financial Markets and Investment Club in early June, a speaker announced: NASDAQ just closed at a record high!

(268,724 posts)It took only days for the coronavirus to claim the life of Richard Curren.
Curren, and his wife, Sheila Curren, had been living their lives at the Atria Willow Wood assisted living facility in Fort Lauderdale when Curren became ill on a Wednesday a week and a half ago. He felt weak. He began to have trouble breathing.
The Currens didnt think much of it, at first: He was just sick, and you dont immediately run to the ER, said their daughter, Tracy Curren Wieder.
But by the wee hours of Monday morning, the burly 77-year-old was gone.
Curren was the first of two elders whose deaths at the care center have been linked to the coronavirus. At least five other residents of the center have tested positive were hospitalized, making the home a hot spot and an echo of the nursing home in Kirkland, Washington, where earlier in the global pandemic 26 people died, at least 13 of whom tested positive for the virus.
Results were pending on six other Atria residents.
The Atria outbreak is a grim reminder: Though elders and disabled people seek safety and protection at long-term facilities, nursing homes and ALFs also can be hotbeds of contagion.
-------------------------------------------
On l=Local 10 a few minutes ao:
Sheila then moved in with her son in Miami Dade. He has a household of five people plus mom. Sheila was not given a test. Sheila has finally been given a test - she is positive.

The 6 foot rule is pretty strictly followed everywhere Ive seen. It is not business as usual here in Florida. Hotels and motels are closed, all visitors are urged to leave. Restaurants are closed and only offer takeout. Schools and public places are closed. As far as I know here where I live and in Saint Pete where my friends live, only the grocery stores and drugstore, Fast food takeout places, and any restaurants that want to offer takeout.
Go to the Sarasota web site... All that information should be there.

(12,370 posts)It sounds like they might be safer where you are especially if they refuse to follow the isolation procedures. Not sure about flights right now though, although I have a friend who is a pilot and flies out of Miami and he is still doing flights and says that the planes are about 1/3 full. Just make sure that they understand that they have to use really good handwashing technique and no face touching and all the rest.

(63,221 posts)Not going out at all. I hope they can get out, but it will take my entire family to convince them. They just love the beach and the warm weather. Unfortunately, I think they are at that age where they don't care very much. I hope we can convince them for our sake.

(12,370 posts)Its really not business as usual. Even though the governor is crazy, most people have good common sense and certainly know the right things to do. I think your parents probably fit into that category too. In the beginning residents and snowbirds still wanted the socialization, but very quickly the serious news spread and ppl hunkered down.

(9,685 posts)This is going to get horrific in Florida and with the age of the population health care is going to be over whelmed very quickly. Get them home and self isolated. I speak from the center of the UK pandemic. Florida is doing nothing to stop this and is is going to go through the population in a heartbeat. My mother who is 76 is in her house. No visitors, no going out, other than to her garden, with my twin getting her groceries and self distancing on the door step. Love, I speak from a position of love when I tell you to get them home now. If shit shuts down, and it may well do, they could be left in what experts are suggesting will be one of the next epicentres cause the governor and trump are arseholes. The end of April will be too late IMO.

(63,221 posts)We are from a remote location in upstate NY which would be relatively safe for them. Thank you so much for your concern Soph! I will do everything I can to persuade them to leave. I would be devastated if anything were to happen to them. I just want them out of there.
Soph0571
(9,685 posts)Don't persuade them. Tell them that this is what is going to happen. Arrange their tickets and tell them to get the hell on the plane. I have to do this with my mother every day. No you are not going to the shop, no you are not going to the pharmacy, someone in the family will pick it up. They can be stubborn old buggers, but they are our old buggers and we want them round for as long as possible. Take control and tell them to get their wrinkly old arses north, right now. Demand it. Command it. And I don't know your parents, but I know my Dad (who is dead now) was the most stubborn of men - but when I did that - in the 2008 crisis about his pension - he did exactly what I said. Of course he then said it was all his own idea
You need them home safe and sound. Good luck love. I am so pleased I know where my mother is. I feel so sorry about the weight of your worry right now.

(9,685 posts)Here is bad, Florida is going to be worse. And at least we have the NHS. They need to be home, not somewhere where a decision is made that they don't need a ventilator cause they are old and not Floridian. You know these fuckers do would that. Please keep me posted.

(9,685 posts)I have not been there since Trump got elected. I am boycotting America until he has gone, but the rentals are currently doing OK as the old republican infected people flee to the South... and a state that does not give a shit about them, maybe with covid already...

They're grasshoppers who think Trump isn't respected for the doing a " damn fine job, considering."

(111,175 posts)People retire there because it's endless summer with an occasional chilly day in winter, year round outdoor activities, and lots of people their own age from all over the country. My dad thought it was a real slice of heaven.
My mother, who didn't get to retire from housework and cooking 3 meals a day, said she enjoyed seeing high rise condos go up because they'd make Florida sink faster.
With such a huge elderly population, they're going to be in real trouble there. Care will have to be rationed to people with a good chance of surviving a week on a vent. That sounds harsh, but it's a kindness. If my parents were still alive, I'd want that decision for them. Now that I've had my three score and ten, I'd want it for me.
That said we don't know whats coming for us in Jamaica. We have 30 confirmed so far. If it ever hits our inner city, dawg nyam our suppa.

Seminole and Lake(my county) have done nothing beyond Governor DeShitis orders to close restaurants and bars.
My wife is working from home and has not left the yard for over a week. I have to work but we are taking extreme precautions to prevent spread. As a manager I have full authority to send someone home for even a bad cough. And failing to follow social distancing will result in discipline. And most of us work in the field alone all day.
The problem is the grocery. I could write chapters on how dangerous a trip to Publix has become. Fortunately I have found a very well stocked Winn Dixie near the attractions that most locals dont seem to know about. I went this morning and I bet there werent 20 cars in the lot. Never came with 10 feet of another shopper.

(32,075 posts)People here STILL don't get it. There's always at least one slack-jawed moron around who doesn't understand that "social distancing" doesn't mean walking 4' away from someone else in the grocery store, and staring blankly at a shelf, doing nothing.
Not to mention that what happens in Florida doesn't stay in Florida. I see plenty of cars with Florida tags here in South Carolina. AND, New York and other northeastern states.
