#BoycottEverlane

Every single member of our union committee was fired. Anyone that currently showed public support of the union with a union slack avatar was fired. Everlane is using this pandemic as an excuse to gut our movement.

Everlane Reassures Workers, Then Lays Off and Furloughs Hundreds
The "ethical" clothing retailer recently claimed to workers that its "team connection" was "stronger than ever."

The clothing retailer Everlane, the branding of which has long been insistently focused on “radical transparency” and ethical behavior in all parts of its business, has made sweeping layoffs, VICE has learned, after sending an email to staffers assuring them the company was “stronger than ever” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Remote “customer experience” workers who are in the midst of unionizing and asked the company for recognition earlier this week were nearly all laid off, with 42 of the 57 members of that team out of work. According to an internal message from Everlane CEO Michael Preysman, the text of which was shared with VICE, so were 180 part-time retail employees, while 68 full-time retail employees were “furloughed”. Last week, Everlane laid off eight temporary workers with three days’ notice and no severance.

Retail employees are also reeling. “I just got furloughed today,” a retail employee based in New York told VICE. “All of the retail workers that are being trained for the CX positions are managers.”

...The Twitter account for the unionizing Everlane workers sent out a series of messages confirming that they’d nearly all been laid off and that workers from the retail stores were being trained to replace them.

I had never heard of them, either, but I went to the website. Overpriced fashion crap.

I got a jacket from them and it fell apart in short order. The quality of their clothes is terrible. They just have a good PR department.

I know someone in design there. I wonder if she lost her job.
I need to check. This is unconscionable.

I will say, to be nerdy here a second, a weird data metric that came to my attention about them.

We talk about turn or selling velocity in apparel. Generally it depends on how much of a particular style you buy as to how much you have to sell of it each day, week, season per store etc--to be considered good.

Everlane had no stores, so that is a factor here i admit may skew how i have traditionally looked at things.

However, in my career, generally anything above a 7 would be good. I heard a particular style launched late in the week and had to hit a 27 by Sunday. This created a very unrelaxing weekend for people watching and invested in this benchmark. I can only assume it's that times dozens of hundreds of styles, all the time?

What does it mean? Not sure. Super agressive metrics. Because its online only? Cash flow problem?

I just remember thinking i would not want to work there maybe.

...I am one of the 42 remote part-time Everlane customer experience team members laid off without warning or notice on March 27, 2020. Many of you voiced your support through our media channels and had asked if there was a way to help us out, so we decided to create this page in response to these heartfelt messages.

For those not in the loop, Everlane framed these lay-offs to be a direct result of COVID-19's impact on their revenue. However, just a few days prior to the abrupt dismissal of my fellow workers, our team had asked Everlane for voluntary recognition of our union. While we did not receive a response immediately, Everlane did respond—by laying off a majority of our team and issuing full-time work for the remaining 17 members. While we are absolutely happy that a portion of our team members were able to secure full-time positions, the rest of us have been left to find ways to make ends meet during a pandemic in which finding a new job is near impossible.

Previously, as a team of just 62 people, we have answered thousands of emails/chats/messages with as much empathy and kindness as possible. Our team consists of stay-at-home moms, artists, students, and many more. Many of us relied on Everlane for a steady income, especially after being reassured that there would be no lay-offs during this uncertain time. The shock of this news has been emotionally exhausting, but our team is here for each other and finding ways to support each other in any way we can. We all love this team, and we are so glad to witness the outpouring of support from so many people in response to this untimely and unethical decision.

Every cent donated to this gofundme will go to living expenses, food, shelter, necessities for those who were affected by this directly. If you have the capacity, please consider donating, and if not, please share this page among those you know. All of your support means so much, and our team cannot thank you enough.
