(23,338 posts)Do you have any info on this? I'm trying to muddle through the bill's language, but it's dense (as am I sometimes). Plus, it still may get amended in the House.

Nothing like yet another corporate gift fund at our expense!
I would also like to have seen the Defense Production Act initiated AND funded before any corporate gift handouts.

(57,073 posts)I'd read here yesterday that the $1,200 for those on SSI/SSDI is only going to those who have enough additiinal income to have to pay taxes.

(15,767 posts)I think the government sends out a tax form every year to people on social security (all forms). Do you know if you got anything from the social security department with an overview of what you earned in 2019?

(57,073 posts)Hi again, Jim.
I normally do receive a 1099, but my mail goes to a PO Box & I haven't gone near that place for fear of infection. I will get #s from online accounts & do taxes though.
We have a friend who is legally blind on SSDI, living on approx. $600/ month. The thought of her & others in like situations being passed over because they don't make enough to pay taxes infuriates me beyond words!
TY again!
dware
(12,363 posts)everyone on SSI who received a 1099 form will receive a $1200.00 check deposited electronically if you already have direct deposit, a paper check if not.
TY for clarifying!
I hope Auntie Maxine's plan is enacted soon!

(14 posts)The thing I don't understand is why are those that are employed or are already receiving government assistance getting more government assistance. My thoughts are the handout should only be for those affected, e.g. laid off or fired or have a loss of income directly related to the pandemic.

They have those little librarie boxes in a few spots in the community I live in, if it wasn't for those I'd be one hungry puppy.
As a elderly/ disabled that gets 100.00 SNAP for the whole month.
Even 10.00 can buy bread or eggs.
I put every penny right back into this economy.

(2,201 posts)These are stimulus checks. They are being given to people in the hopes that they will spend the money and boost the economy. They are being given to the people that are most likely to do exactly that.
These aren't checks being given to help only people that have been laid off or fired. The increased unemployment amount is for that.

(14 posts)..a reasonable response. Good point.

(17,174 posts)Whatever. As I've said before, this is the confusion that results from Congress passing a "hybrid" bill -- part assistance, part stimulus.
But if it makes anyone feel better, I'm not getting one cent in "assistance" -- but I'll be getting the same $1200 most everyone else will be getting in "stimulus."
Either way, we'll be finding out for sure in the next few hours when it's passed by the House.

(445 posts)Do it electronically.
You would still owe no tax, only the filing fee.
Since the IRS does not know who you are, or where to deposit the check, and they are using 2018 data.
this should fix that

(3,276 posts)that if you receive social security and don't receive enough to have to file taxes, the government will use the most recent 1099 you received, for 2019, to determine your eligibility to receive this new additional payment. Meaning you don't need to do anything extra.
