So this woman not only buys out a local Dollar Tree of every single box of paper towels, napkins, and toilet paper so that no one else can buy any, but caps it off with this:
"Donald Trump! Go Donald Trump!"

(8,864 posts)In most states, price gouging during a time of emergency is illegal and a violation of unfair or deceptive trade practices law though only a few states have declared a state of emergency due to coronavirus at this point.
Where did this occur?
If it is in a state that has declared a State Emergency, send the video to the authorities.

(1,648 posts)Even better taking the Interstate at a higher speed, so the boxes down in the bed get whipped out too.
They probably got home and immediately armed themselves to go after the thieves who stole their loot while they were driving.

Considering how a part of our society has bought into the right-wing self-centered individualism mania, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
If our supply chains can hold up and with many economists thinking deflation may come around, these people could easily lose that gamble.

They had shelves full of paper products in their basement.
When the panic passed, they had paper products. They bought no toilet paper or tissues quite literally for years. Stuff doesn't go bad in that length of time, so no hurt/no foul.

(61,676 posts)Like my husband and me, keep a well-stocked pantry so we don't need to binge /panic buy. We keep a lot so that there is plenty left on the shelves for others. Most people who follow this practice accept that it means sharing when others are in need. I've already shared toilet paper with one person nearby, paper towels with another, and baby wipes drenched in 91% alcohol with two other people.
barbtries
(28,703 posts)not everyone can afford to do this. I do it now but when I was raising my kids...sometimes i had to run out and settle for the store brand I was so broke. Sometimes we had paper napkins or paper towels in the bathroom.
Right now after inventory, I think we have enough to hopefully weather the crush. hopefully.
Ilsa
(61,676 posts)those who appear to be "unprepared", and it's why I share what I have.
And even if someone has the money, it doesn't mean they have the space for storing paper goods, months of canned goods, dehydrated foods, etc.

(35,199 posts)And the next day, had she gone back, she'd have seen all her hard work in trying to screw everybody else out of any toilet paper had come to naught, what with the shelves all full again.
Got cat food yesterday at a Petco. Asked if I could have two large bags. "Sure. Somebody cleaned us out a day ago. Bought dozens of bags, laughing that he'd have the stuff when nobody else did. Truck came the next day." He opened the doors to their storage area. Pallets of cat food. "Buy all you want. This has to last us until Monday, though, that's when the next stock delivery is." And he laughed. Still got two bags. I buy near where I work, but since I'm working at home now I won't be in the area for a while.

(5,707 posts)Light crowds, most things stocked. Ramen, incredibly, is still gone from the shelves--as are eggs (!), rice and dry pasta--but salad greens, fruits, tomatoes, most heat-n-eat stuff and the deli foods were in ample supply. Cheese wasn't as well-stocked as usual but not scarce. Paper products are in gradual recovery mode.
Same deal at the local-owned fresh-veggie store. Prices up a substantial nudge but not super gougey. 7-Eleven got stripped of ramen and bumwipe on Screaming Panic Day in the Bay Area, but if I want something stupid to snarf after work they'll be the only thing open and they'll be stocked.
Walgreens shows a lot of panic-related items "out of stock" store-by-store on their website, but some essential items are held in the back so assholes can't strip the shelves. Smart! (Preposterous pricing also helps, but that's not a new tactic for Walgreens.)
So yeah, unless Trump and the GOP manage to botch things further--and of course that's a distinct possibility and maybe even a likelihood--the hoarders and gougers are going to faceplant hard. They should still be subject to horrible fates regardless. Had we a decent government, they would have been subject to arrest from the very start of the crisis.

(8,584 posts)The CEO of the "Dollar" stores franchise is Art Pope. Her inherited the fortune of "Jinuh" junk. He was appointed to oversee North Carolona Treasurey after he bought McCury the governorship. There is one in every direction within a quarter mile of each other in WNC. We got a church, a dollar store, and a gun store any where you are here. Maggie Valley had a strict no franchise policy to keep it a small town mountain tourist attraction. A year after his appointment a massive Dollar store was approved down town. There are 2 already just out of the city limits. His goal, keep people poor and force them to give him your money. Trump 2.O.

(22,418 posts)On cardboard, however, the new coronavirus lasted three times longer than SARS did: 24 hours, compared with eight hours.
This deplorable just upped her chances of infection by handling all those boxes. All it takes is one sneeze in her general direction and all those boxes become deadly, for 24 hours.
I doubt she's smart enough to be careful.

(2 posts)Just checked Dollar Tree website. As of the 19th there are limits on amount of essential items sold to individual customers. I would surely think those items fall under that category. Unless that video was days old, I would suspect someone's employment would be in jeopardy, if not, at least, to salvage what would be left of the severely damaged company image.
