Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI got a shingles shot yesterday.
It did not hurt at all. Well, as the day got later I started to get sore then the pain started going down my arm. I hurt so much I hardly slept and when I got up the pain had traveled down to my wrist. My neck and upper back hurts also. I am exhausted and can not think clearly and my stomach has been nauseous on and off all day. I do not have a rash.
Has anybody here had that reaction to a shingles shot?

(3,739 posts)afterward. I had just gotten the old vaccine and a couple of weeks later they came out with the new one. I decided just to go with the old one after hearing how miserable my brother and his wife were for a while after they got the new one.

(16,646 posts)My shoulder hurt both times and the second time I had a fever the next morning (of which I was warned).

(12,154 posts)A day after the shot, i was exhausted, which lasted a couple of days. No pain, though.
Still, it beats shingles!!
no reaction to speak of from the first one. The second one made me feel flu-ish for about two days. Some people say the first shot is the worst, some people the second.

(21,865 posts)I must be lucky. I had read it may make me feel like crap. but it didn't. Just a sore upper arm for a few days.
Hope you feel better quickly!

(2,220 posts)My arm was incredibly swollen and too painful to touch for ten days. I ran a fever of over 100 for three days. Every muscle on my body ached. I stayed in bed for most of a week. Worst reaction Ive ever had. When I got the follow-up shot three months later, I had the same symptoms, but for only two days.
I wish you well and remember..once you get through this, you never have to do it again.

(2,220 posts)If so, its a two-shot vaccine. Maybe you got the old shingles vaccine which is only one shot. If so, congratulations, you never have to go through this again!

(11,686 posts)They also gave pneumovax. Does not tell me to go back.

(12,809 posts)I think it's been longer than that since I got the first one. Maybe 5 months by now. Oops.
I'd hate to get it and have a reaction in the middle of the current pandemic, though.

Said it hurt badly.

(31,146 posts)I had the same reaction as the first shot...arm hurt, but more importantly felt very lethargic, slight headache and aching body. Just didn't have any energy and felt miserable.
I started feeling better about 36 hours after the shot if that's any consolation.

(12,422 posts)Both times I had to take the next day off from work I was so fatigued and had chills and body aches. I remember the second shot was done at 2 pm in the afternoon and almost exactly at 2:30 pm the next day all my symptoms disappeared, like a switch had been thrown, like my immune system took 24 hours to figure it out and said, "All right, body, false alarm. Get back to work."

(9,899 posts)The next day it felt like someone punch me in the arm. Still, I wont miss my next one due in April, my wifes friend caught shingles. No thank you!

(61,695 posts)Fever, aches, anorexia, like I had the flu. But it has 90% coverage, much better than the old one.

I have no idea how the insurance paid on it.

(9,694 posts)and then. I have had a lot of painful stuff in my almost 80 years but shingles was the absolute worst. GET THE SHOT!

(42,307 posts)The anti-viral my doc gave me spared me from the worst of the welts but the pain!!! I've dealt with a lot of pain over the years but this was just bizarre. I felt if for up to a year later - random pain that would almost bring me to my knees.

(4,610 posts)My medical provider recommends the shingles vaccine at age 45, I got shingles at 42.
Two things in my favor: I recognized what it was quickly and got to the clinic early in the flare-up, and being young for shingles I think helped me fight it faster. And even so, it was still the worst physical pain I've been through. Like I was shot broadside in the hip with bird-shot.
I tell everyone to get that vaccine. You DO NOT want shingles.

(9,664 posts)The second shot was worse. I'd take the sore arm any day over the fluish thing.

(23,539 posts)so bad it hit his vocal cords, he had bells palsy symptoms and had to be fed by a g tube for a few months. Not to mention the severe pain from the shingles.
You should call your doctor to be sure. I really hope your reaction is brief and you get better soon.

(10,885 posts)The first shot was a day of fatigue and 3 days of arm soreness.
The second shot was very much like what you experienced. Knocked me out for 5 days.
Still beats getting shingles, though.

(27,045 posts)The only reaction I had from the first shot was a sore arm - that lasted, on and off, until the second shot. My arm was sore for a couple of days after the second one, but now it's fine, and so far hasn't recurred like the first one did. Someone I know was very sick from the shots.

(14,742 posts)a day or two of fatigue and 3 days of arm soreness. But other than that, nothing.
Hopefully number 2 won't be bad either.

(1,246 posts)I was stirring something on the stove and my arm suddenly became very sore and painful. It is not uncommon and hurst as it is a live virus that they inject. Verified by the pharmacist the next day.

My brother had shingles, was terrible.

(258 posts)I had the 1st shingles vaccine in January. My arm really hurt for about 5 days - like a deep bruise. Im supposed to get the 2nd shot in June, but the COVID19 outbreak may derail that.

(17,108 posts)became really sore, and I only had partial use of it until just recently. It gradually tapered off. It's just within the last couple of weeks, while I've been home-in-place, that the residual soreness finally went away.
It became painful to lift my arm. The arm / shoulder tissues became semi-permanently sore. I'm glad it's finally subsided.

(63,221 posts)My arm was pretty sore, but other than that, no real side effects - that I could tell. However, I always have tension headaches w/ neck and back pain so maybe I just didn't associate it w/ the shot. I just go through a lot of Salon Pas patches and BioFreeze to deal with the pain.
Actually, it just occurred to me that since I have been wfh, I have not had tension headaches/back/neck pain. I think maybe there is something about the office that is causing it. Hmm.
Anyway, I hope you feel better soon. It should be temporary and from what I have heard, it is much better than coming down with shingles!

Also... keep in mind that this will ease up over the next few days and it's NOTHING like the pain of having shingles.
