So,went to my local country club for an enjoyable Sunday morning of golf and got put in with a group of guys I had not seen there before.
All was fine for a few holes with just normal small talk about the start of football season when one of the guys suddenly says "did you see any of the convention last week,I can`t believe they think that n####r should be reelected".
One of the other guys laughed and said something about him being an affirmative action experiment.
The third guy just stood there looking stunned and I exploded saying how the fuck dare you use such racist words against our President!
I told them they ought to be ashamed and faux news inspired hatred like that had no place in our society.
They looked at me like I had two heads and said good luck with being a socialist but we are here to play golf.
I told them to go ahead,I would follow.
They went to the tee and hit while I hung back.
When it was his turn the third guy said "I will hang back and play with him (me)"
He told me after they had gone that he could not believe such racism still exists but guess it is what a repuke has to be.
He is now going to be voting for President Obama I believe!

If I go out cleaned up, someone invariably ASSumes I'm one of the entitled. While I try not to sandbag anyone, I do let them know their ASSumptions about too many things are seriously in error.
Well, unless they're being hideously racist. Then I just ask them what the fuck is the matter with them.

Why they did that, I never really did figure out. Poor J. was used to living in much more tolerant WA. He looks white, and you would not believe the things that have been said in front of him.

Maybe it's too late for that.
Report the names of those racists to the club. I think a letter to the editor of the largest paper in your area is in order, and use their names. Where do they work? Would their boss be interested in knowing that their employee is a racist?
You were right to call them on it, but if that is all that happens, they will rationalize that you are only one crazy SOB and continue on, as before.
Racism will continue on, until racists change their minds. Pain, shame and embarrassment are ways of helping the wrong-headed change their minds.

(27,787 posts)I grew up in Philly, lived in TX for a few years, and have now in NC for the last 20 or so. As a result, I don't have much of a Phill accent. People can usually figure out that I'm from the North East, but not which part.
I'm a pretty generic looking white guy. Regularly people come up to me and say they think they know me. Or they know my brother. After we determine that they don't know me, I point out that if they go to the mall, they'll pass a guy who looks just like me about every 30 feet or so.
And on a number of occasions, in the right setting, white guys who don't know me will say either racist things, or sexist things, assuming that I'll agree, because I look the part.
This is also part of how I can tell when the GOP is using one of their more subtle dog whistles. And how when they feign ignorance about the racial tone of something they've said, I know its BS. They know exactly what they were doing.

Also, one can follow or "hang back" but if you're playing in a foursome the four of you will all be on the green at the same time. Most marshalls WILL NOT allow a foursome to become two twosomes after leaving the first tee unless it's a weekday and there isn't another foursome on your heels. (24,853 posts)But even then that means a 7am tee-off at the very latest. To get a tee time like that on Sunday is next to impossible even on a "semi-public" country club course. If it's "semi-public", there are members who get first crack at those times. The other tell was the $35 dollar green fees on a Sunday at a country club. Where I live it's not possible to find anything less than about $60 on a Sunday, and that's on the municipal courses.

im sure that country club doesnt want rumors of allowing blatant racism on its course
thats just me tho... and i tend to push things a bit far, im told
ive found most businesses would rather have no association with anything controversial if they can help it... and are quick to remedy those types of issues..
every once and a while ull have a business owner (using a big franchise name) try to put up a political or religious statement on the businesses property they own...
unfortunately for them, they dont just represent themselves when they have a giant sign outside with a corporations name on it.
there are exceptions to this of course, like the recent chic-fi-la deal...
but in doing so, they accept any consequences that come with it..
and trust me, most places DONT WANT that kinda publicity.
i recently had to get CSX/AMTRAK to remove a set of ten commandments someone put up at a local train depot... took almost a month, and they attempted to blame each other a few times, but its definitely gone now.
about to do it to a local radio shack over a political sign infront of their building and on their lot actually... lol...
typically you just have to say things like 'im writing an editorial' and 'is this official stance of *insert name here* ?'
at any rate, you may have missed an opportunity to give the guys at the very least a scolding from management about proper behavior on their course
good job sticking up for your beliefs tho... most people dont when out numbered. takes courage.

Frankly all these stories of what people said to racists and homophobes, especially since the star of them is usually the OP, even if true, do nothing to help deal with the problem, other than give someone a story to tell on the internet.

Having and/or uttering that kind of toxin should be WIDELY known and condemned. Would they, indeed, LIKE for rumors to start spreading that they're the Klan Kountry Klub (Hey! There should be pain and cost and unpleasantness to suffer in exchange for reprehensible behavior displays like that. HMMMM - does this club actually SANCTION that attitude or that behavior? Think Kirk set that one up on the last TOS movie. If things were go to forward, they have to get passed people like them. Which is where it went from being where no man has gone before to no one has gone before. Good to know 2 idiots managed to change someones mind. Gotta love people like that in the end. They'll lose if they keep putting that pure obvious 100 % racist thing out there. They have the argument if you argue against Obama you must be racist but you use a racial epitaph like that. Kinda make it obvious for those who are simply voting republican because they have always voted republican and they aren't racist and that comes out and someones real morals get in the way.
Bush didn't particularly give a shit how america looked to everyone else thus we lost that WWII respect people had about us. Obama saying sorry for our error in torturing people was for the good of the country, i can't imagine Ann Romney getting kids out during an olympics game. (3,544 posts)I have posted on here over and over how much racism is very much alive in this country. They also think he's a muslim too. You did right by calling them out, but unfortunately, it will not change a thing. I'm willing to bet that 90% of repugs are racist too. It's quite sickening.

(23,867 posts)After being on the internet for longer than I can believe, I've know of one or two websites that control how participants behave. They do so by applying direct pressure when and where it's needed. It takes skill and bravery. But I've watched it over and over. And to my amazement, these sites continue to be civil, amongst a sea of incivility on the net.
The same applies to a country, I believe. Americans are almost prodded and goaded into being ignorant. I believe commercial interests are partly to blame. But it's also politics. Basically it boils down to money. An ignorant and uncivilized portion of our society is skating by without being called to defend their pathetic behavior.
There are a few on this forum who have been posting about there encounters lately. I even had a dream I was going to send them personal messages, thanking them. I'm inspired every time I see someone who is brave enough and bright enough to stand up and speak like a civilized being.
Good for you. You're an inspiration for all.

I know that there is a lot of racism out there - most recently evidenced by the Treyvon Martin murder - but I don't believe this story. Most of the educated republicans I am around (and there are plenty - I live in Texas) would not dare say something like that. The more common theme is that Obama is a community organizer who has never had a job. Which is silly because he was a summer associate at the same type of law firm their own kids would work at, and he did work as a lawyer/professor after law school along with being in the Illinois Senate and the House. His path really wasn't all that different from Bill Clinton's - except Clinton became Governor instead of a rep. But they are very careful about what they say and I'd be very surprised to hear something like this. Among the teabaggers it is a different story - but that is largely a lower income level.

(1) The United States is STILL in a world of hurt. President Clinton nailed it: it will take several four-year term with the smartest people in the room working to heal the damage wrought by cheney*/bush*.
(2) Given all we know, President Obama is definitely one of the smartest people in the room, surpassing, IMHO both Rmoney and Ryan.
(3) Racist tones openly permeate many conversations about this election, and race is one of the justifications for a Rmoney presidency.

no Obummer (that's how he pronounced it) voters have a nice ride like
that, we need to get rid of that Muslim Socialist so us decent folks
can keep our safe and secure lifestyles!"
I said "You probably have no idea what a socialist is, but either way
you're an ignorant bigot for saying those things. You can disagree
with our president but you can't slander him in my presence!"
Another customer was standing there just bringing in his car for some
service and he turned to me and said "Thank you for putting that
jackass in his place, I'll be taking my car elsewhere and even though
I've always been a Republican, you've convinced
me to vote for Mr. Obama!"
I said "Good for you" and told the service manager "I will never come
back to this place and I will be telling the owners why!" He lowered
his eyes, turned around and shuffled away knowing he was suitably
chastised.

If the poster is just trying to play one-ups, well it's a good story that'll hopefully inspire others to do the same.
These kinds of things DO go on. Some people DO take a stand when it's not socially beneficial.
That's where all the changes have come from.
People protesting the status quo for one reason or another.
Somebody stood up against slavery, stood for women's rights, stood up for the right for gays to marry.
The ones who don't always outnumber the ones who do at first, but the ones who do actually exist.
I take the poster's story at face value.

(1,250 posts)It's the internet I know but when it comes to personal accounts either they're TRUE or they're FALSE.
I would rather not be so automatically suspicious of people telling their personal accounts.
If that's the case why read anything?
I have no way surefire way of knowing whether what some anonymous person on the internet talks about is true or not.
So should I automatically discredit every personal account I read & say "You're lying"?
Unlike organized media which have political & financial reasons for lying, regular people only lie to impress or conceal.
Maybe some people write these stories to impress but unless I have significant cause to suspect the story I'll take it at face value.
If it's false, so what? It's a good story that may inspire people to follow in the storyteller's footsteps.
With organized media I have more cause to suspect what I read.
Can't live in a world without trust, spayneuter.
You can easily go through the world mindlessly distrusting everything you see & hear.
But that makes you paranoid.
Trusting is gambling & I played those 50/50 odds & took your story & the original poster's story at face value.
If false, what did I really lose? A few minutes of reading time, big deal.

(108 posts)I believe that is true. I grew up in the 50's and every other word
that came out of my father's mouth was an ethnic slur. Prejudice
was the norm and it could not help affecting me. I admit that some
still lingers and I am ashamed of it. I try hard to make sure that
it does not influence my thinking. I have been in company of many
of my peers and some do not hold back. I believe that anyone can
see this in the Republicans. Look at their convention and then compare
it with the Democrats. Their arguments against The President are
racially slanted. I sincerely hope that this election is so lopsided that
it will wake up the Republican party, but sadly I do not think so.
