My daughter just texted me and said she couldn't get an Amazon/Whole Foods Delivery in Redmond WA. No Deliveries available. She is working at home but will venture out to see what she can get at the Safeway.
I must admit, I was a little snarky about all the folks rushing to the Costcos and clearing the shelves.

(9,353 posts)Must say I was shocked by how many people looked like doomsday preppers!
I went because I had run out of my Marcona almonds and some olive oil. My friend needed TP.
No TP and no Marcona almonds. The line went around the warehouse.
Crazy time!

(29,098 posts)I couldn't order rubbing alcohol yesterday...
I think it's the independent Amazon sellers that are doing the gouging but they are trying to take them down when they pop up.

(46,166 posts)I also ordered an 8-pack of Puffs tissues with lotion and the price beat the heck out of my King Soopers - who, btw, didn't have any on the shelf this morning.
The order should be delivered Thursday. So it must be at a local Amazon warehouse. Especially the tp which they could have delivered tomorrow. But I chose Thursday so less delivery trips here.
The prices of hand sanitizer from Amazon sellers is high to gouging. I found bottles of that locally last Friday. I got the last four bottles. I haven't seen any since then.

(102,276 posts)even though they would not be eating their favorites or desired foods and thus think they have nothing to eat. Do lots of people really shop EVERY day? Have no canned or pantry nonperishable goods?
Maybe you ran out of paper towels? Go pull those old worn out ripped khakis out of the wash or towels with holes and rip them up to use. No kleenex? Bathroom tissue (and vice versa). Etc. Etc. There are lots of temporary substitutions for those things we think we must have...Out of coffee? Time to use up all that tea that has cluttered the shelves for a year or more.
Honestly, I think most of us could wait a couple of weeks for things to be restocked.
Being prepared is good, but I think we can keep this side of "worst-case assumptions" at least for now.

(29,098 posts)My very bright child rarely has much food in her house. They eat out, order in or run into the Trader Joes on the way home. Their kitchen is small and they don't have much storage.
Being some one who prepares for emergencies, I find that very disturbing.

How things change, I guess..

(29,098 posts)She grew up with home cooked food every night and she knows how to function in the kitchen. She lives in an area surrounded with restaurants and just doesn't bother with the fuss and mess of kitchen stuff. I think for a certain demographic of young professionals they just have different priorities.

(46,166 posts)And people start testing positive in large numbers. It seems to me that panic could be on the horizon. You know how Soopers shelves empty out at the hint of a major snow storm approaching. The basics vanish. So I stocked up on our favorite basics.
I also have a friend who had cancer surgery on Friday. Her sister started a "meal train". My pal won't be able to shop and her hubby will be stressed with work plus caring for her in recovery when she gets home. So a little extra here at our house might extend to another in the form of ready made meals now and then.
I have no covid-19 symptoms but just have a nagging cold. So I feel a heightened sense of concern right now.
Stay stocked and be well!

(102,276 posts)"anxiety" to move through. I don't anticipate shortages being more than temporary--for now. What the longer-term future holds I won't guess.

(10,885 posts)I'm usually pretty well stocked. In fact, every so often I'll force myself to cull the shelves so that canned or packaged items don't get out of date.
My difficulty is, no matter how well stocked I am, I always crave the one damn item I'm out of. How can I eat that bagel without a slice of tomato? Damn! No fresh oranges? How will I deal?
Oh well...

(63,221 posts)It's being delivered on Thursday, but we'll see how many items end up being available.
I don't have a lot of room for storage either, so I just placed a regular order. My cupboards are mostly filled w/ rice, beans, lentils, dried pasta, canned beans, canned tomatoes (crushed and chopped) - things that I can make a stew or soup with. And my freezer has mostly frozen fruits and veggies. I order fresh, but they go bad so quickly.
I'm not panicking yet, but I may need to get more serious about preparing for going a long time without being able to get to a store.
