Just got back from voting, where I had to sit in the car afterward for a minute to compose myself.
I've always done. I can remember in the 80s trying to get out of the polling place before the tears fell. I think it's patriotism. I think voting is the most profound expression of democracy, and I love democracy. I find myself overwhelmed by taking an active part in this momentous occasion. Plus I want my candidates to win so bad, and it means so much.
I will never forgive republicans for diminishing the power of the vote in this country, for sullying my love for my country, for doing everything and anything they can to disempower anyone who isn't them. Never. I want them erased.

(16,177 posts)People were beaten, risked their lives and in some cases lost their lives for the sake of that.
Theres a special place in hell for the people who steal their votes again, after all that.
immigrants, homeless people, indigenous people, poor people. anyone who they think might not vote for them is fair game.

(62,521 posts)these days, I choke up and get very sad when I sing the national anthem and think to myself, what could have been.

(28,789 posts)except the national anthem in the last few years, it kind of leaves me cold. i always think i'd rather take a knee right now.
i also cry at weddings, funerals, movies, and every holiday program any one of my 4 children ever participated in. i could be a paid blubberer.

(28,120 posts)I choked as I said "thank you." An emotional day - it's such a great privilege to exercise our greatest basic right in this country.
I don't take it for granted.
If we're like this during a primary, what'll we do when cast our ballots against trump?

(28,789 posts)Remember Oprah Winfrey weeping? Who thought we'd see a black president in our lifetimes? It was a heady time. I had a "Yes We Can" pin and immediately put a piece of white tape over the "can" and changed it to "Did."
fuck. i started crying again because now we've fallen so far. Warren's been written out of the script for 2020 and I absolutely deplore that.
Hopefully Biden wins the nomination and the election and this ship will begin to be righted. this presidency and republicans' traitorous response to it have just ruined the country. We'll be generations digging out from all the damage they have done, if we can.

(28,789 posts)i imagine they don't cry, but feel a sense of satisfaction for having done their part in owning the libs. i mean it. who celebrates locking up babies and stealing them from their families? Who applauds denying health care to people of little means?
sort of the difference between patriotism and nationalism, egalitarianism and authoritarianism. between the desire for equality and the need to punch down.
i don't know. maybe i'll ask my sister if she cries when she votes.
