I live in Kirkland WA.....UPDATE It's a nationwide shitshow!

Update 3/2 12:24 pm. It's now up to 6 dead in WA. With 18 people affected. There aren't many folks tested so we probably have many many more. The University of WA is reporting that it may have been in the community for well over a month. We are seeing more closures for decontamination efforts but IMO without testing that is just a noble but fruitless effort. It just takes one person to come in and spread the virus on surfaces again.

It was just reported that another person from the nursing home died today...So now that's two deaths here. In addition the confirmed cases county wide now is up to 10. I am not personally afraid. I am taking every precaution possible and am not putting myself in situations where I'm exposed to large amounts of people. Our Amazon Prime deliveries are backed up two days...So if you want to order delivery you need to think ahead. My family doesn't need to self quarantine at this point so we are still walking the dog and doing quick trips to the store. Costco was pretty much a mess yesterday. We weren't there, but heard it was a zoo and the stock was dwindling fast. Restaurants are empty and the facebook local groups are seeing lots more posting.

For the most part, I feel like the local news and government has been really good about providing information and education without un necessary fear mongering.

I'm telling you this because Kirkland really could be your town, your community. We are a fairly affluent community outside of Seattle. Our population is pretty much families who want to benefit from our beautiful lake, parks and excellent schools. It's not if anymore- it is when this will impact your community.

Please wash your hands, sanitize your hard surfaces like door knobs, and don't go out if you are feeling sick.

I always have lots of canned and easy to prepare food in the house because of earthquake danger here. Also the particular area I live in is very hilly and frequently loses power in snow storms so I usually have quite a bit in the pantry in the winter. I am a Costco shopper and usually have an extra case socked away under the bed in the spare room. I know, I'm a little weird. The toilet paper is probably my biggest worry but as long as Amazon is still delivering it shouldn't be a problem.

My husband is going to work tomorrow. He's getting a little annoyed that I'm getting a little hypervigilant in reminding him to wash his hands. I've never been that concerned about keeping things pristine around the house but I am wiping surfaces all the time and finding new things to clean. I'm keeping hand sanitizer and wipes in the car and wiping the car door handles and steering wheel and gear thingie. I think the hardest thing though is not touching your face. It's something we all do reflexively and it's a struggle to break that habit.

Now I’m just imagining things like, well, we know some of your fire crews are at home in self-quarantine ALL OF A SUDDEN as of yesterday, right, so I must wonder, hmmmm, will lots of Kirkland delivery people end up getting infected and they’ll get sent home (to rest and get well soon) and then there’s no one to deliver your toilet paper to you?!??

Ha, that is my only concern about you; other than this, I think you got it covered!!

Ha, this hand washing thing, I didn’t know how to properly do that until this week, when a DUer posted the Jimmy Kimmel bit about it and - what an education!!! So I hope dear husband will just...DO IT!!

Those nursing students are getting a very unexpected and unwelcomed education. We have half our fire department out on quarantine and one whole station closed. I think there are two or three para medics out too. Good thing we have great neighboring communities who are available to us.

Although I know they must disinfect ultimately it takes just one person sheading the virus to infect the surface again. So I worry it gives folks a false sense of security. There are always going to be assholes who won't comply with staying home or who don't clean their hands.

Of course it’s showing up in Portland area. And N CA. Looks like this area will be the epicenter, but who really knows. I’ll take precautions but not going to go crazy. Most people have mild symptoms, I guess somewhat like other flu. And some have no symptoms which is troubling. I’m in pretty good health but in my 60s. Right now I just hope hoarders don’t clear out the supermarkets. I know hand sanitizer is all gone. I’ve heard of other goods too. Someone sent me a pic from Fred Myers (local super market) in Portland with bare shelves today.

Retired, so I can limit my exposure. The ex is a teacher in Portland and they are having a big meeting in the morning with a late start for the kids.

But Trump is going to visit the CDC tomorrow. I’m sure another calming press conference will help

Basically rubbing alcohol and aloe vera…. I'm sure you can google it. At home hand washing is the best. Also when you are sanitizing surfaces it is best to leave the bleach water on the surface for a few minutes or let it dry in place if it won't damage the surface.

Oy...Another day of Trump to look forward to...

It's hard to know when to make the call to pull the trigger on self quarantine. It's good she is taking care of herself and protecting the community. It would be so wonderful to have the drive through testing like they do in Korea now so we could know for sure if it's just a little cold or the full bore virus. Not everyone who gets it becomes so ill they need to be hospitalized. It's that time of year where many of us get the sniffles. I wish Trumps CDC didn't waste all that time ditzing around and not getting testing up and running back in Dec and Jan. But you know how it is...The stock market and the wallet is more important than the American People and their health and welfare.

I have had two long term viruses this year since October which each lasted about two months. This exacerbated my asthma so I am back on a morning and evening inhaler. I am 74 so I decided to not go out anymore.

It is hard. I had to cancel my Spanish class at the university, my trip to Spain in May with friends is cancelled and tickets for events are not going to be used. I am having to face more months of staying in the house. I plan to clean the basement and paint some rooms, making good use of the time. We really don’t know what will happen. Here in my state of NRW, we are the most densely populated state in the country. My daughter said that there was a case of positive infection in the local office here of her law firm, and that I should avoid the train station and the airport--juts at the start of one of the most busy travel times of the year for me. I have to be in Paris, Brussels and Munich this week. Next week, back down to Spain, and probably Belgium and Holland as well. Swell time to tell me to avoid train stations and airports!

If you live in Kirkland, at least you local Costco should be well-stocked. There is one in Springfield, VA, near where my brother lives, and he usually takes me there when I'm in Washington, D.C. Everything is Kirkland brand this or Kirkland brand that.

The corporate office moved several years ago to Issaquah. Actually our Costco is a little smaller than the newer ones. I wouldn't set foot in it over the weekend. I heard it was a mad house and there were multiple fights over staples like the last bag of rice. Water Cases and of course the Toilet Paper were in short supply.

Amazon is still delivering, but their two hour fresh deliveries are now delayed and a few days out.

You are right, our State is doing a good job in getting the info out. There are still lots of unknows but we can only do what we can do.

It might upset the nature of the towns here, though. We have our outdoor farmers market in the town square like they have been doing here for the last 800 years, and no one here wants to see that disappear. Obviously, that is not where people get water or toilet paper, but even those stores are adjacent to the town square, where the market is, so one rarely has to go far.

We are very exposed, as we have control-free borders with about 9 other countries. Where I live, it is less than a 2 hour drive to Holland or Belgium, and less than 4 to France. It takes under 90 minutes to fly from here to London, Paris, anywhere in Switzerland, Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Milano, Denmark--you get the idea. Two hours, and you can be in Spain, Hungary, Croatia, Sweden, etc. Once there has been a case here (and there have been several), it's more a question of time than anything else.

Bottled water (why?), milk, some vegetables (I was there specifically for zucchini, no luck), a few frozen goods. Long lines, full parking lot. I was surprised to see people still using cash. Nasty.

Researchers from Fred Hutch and UW tweeted Saturday that they'd been studying the genomic pattern of the virus and the first Washington case (Jan 20) appeared to have had a two-week incubation period, so the virus has been loose in the wild in WA since early January. This thread has a great deal of info:

They posted their results as gisaid.org .

Wash your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds. Try to learn to not touch your face. Use hand sanitizer after touching surfaces-- the virus can last up to 9 days on surfaces. Sanitize your phone regularly.

Seriously, I’m in no mood to go exactly where every sick person in the area is going.

But I’m impressed at the local and state expertise and I’m also pretty sure it’s been around for some weeks.

I agree that local authorities are doing a good job of keeping people informed and not stoking fear. I'm grateful for that.

Shit, CNBC just announced 4 new deaths.

Mar 2020

I have what I normally would self diagnose as a slight winter cold. I've been feeling it for a few weeks now. Not sick enough to be sick but not operating at 100%. My breathing is fine but I am running a slight fever at times, sniffles and a very slight sore throat. I normally would not give it a second thought but now...who knows? My husband was sick two weeks ago but is fine now. I'm at home because I'm retired but he's out working and running around. If I have the virus...is he shedding it out in the community as well. I do not fit the parameters for testing nor should I even go to the Dr's now. There is nothing they can do for me that I already am not already doing.

It's a very frustrating situation.. And more people have died...and now we are losing Redmond fire fighter to quarantine...

I live right on the border of Woodinville/Kirkland, five minutes from Evergreen Hospital. Schools are beginning to close due to this, and everyone in the area has it on their minds. I actively avoided Costco, knowing it would be a disaster. I hope everyone in the area, and elsewhere, take the necessary precautions and use their common sense when dealing with this. But, ya know, Pence is praying over the virus, so we should all be good, right? Right?

I wouldn't go either. They were advising folks to avoid crowds so what did everyone do? Run to Costco of course...LOL I have an appointment at Evergreen in two weeks. It's not emergent but I'm not sure if I will keep it or not. I know Northshore is disinfecting schools tomorrow. We've heard nothing from Lake Washington Yet. Oy...Scary times....and even more scary with Trump/Pence running the show

My church is full of elders including myself and I did not go. I have had a long term bout with, shall I call it: "the Green Apple Two-Step" and went to the doctor. Fortunately, that is no symptom for Coronavirus and so they let me go home. I am not too worried and plan to go to Costco tomorrow to get some supplies. I hope everything I need is there, lol.

Most of the time flu epidemics die down and often completely stop in the warmer weather. This will too I am pretty sure.

Hope this helps ...

My daughter happened to be at the Overlake ER today and said all the staff there were suited up and masked. She said it was surreal.

will not make it on the news or they will say it happened in one of the bigger cities. When big things happen here it does not usually get any notice except on the bare local level. Just Maybe Olympia might pay a little attention. I guarantee however if I find out it happened here I will be telling a lot of people starting with the DU family.

Since it's been in the state for months people with flu symptoms or minor symptoms would never know they are spreading the disease. And since it really hits the elderly...Their deaths due to pneumonia or flu could easily have been something else.

So far, no reports of any infections in the county. It's only a matter of time though.

Costco in Lacey was a zoo on Saturday...reminded me of the holiday season. We drove by today and the lot was full again. On Saturday we saw people stocking up on Nitrile gloves, water, coke and frozen items. And liquor. We were surprised that rice stocks were so low...there were only 6 or 7 25 lb bags of Homai rice. Normally the pallet is close to full.

They just don't know because they can't test and the symptoms are so close to the flu. I saw on the latest map that there were cases now in Arizona. We are in this together...Even though there are no cases near you please do what you can to take precautions...wash your hands and avoid touching your face

From what I have read the virus doesn't stay alive as long on paper. If you are washing your hands and trying not to touch your face I think opening packages and cans should be ok. I'm running my dishwasher on sanitize several times a day and wiping things down as much as possible.

Binge buying seems to be a coping mechanism some people are using to calm themselves. It's like if you over prepare...You can feel calmer. I know compulsively wiping down surfaces at home has become a new habit for me. Even if I'm the only one home all day I'm still getting that bleach water working....
