(116,038 posts)He's been saying exactly the opposite for months now.

(23,369 posts)He said theDems hadnt proven their case on obstruction of Congress. FWIW, I think hes just showing off. Claire McCaskill told she loved him but he was flat WRONG.

I don't think he was being obtuse, but offering a devil's advocate argument in the guise of sincerity.

(11,760 posts)And YES there was more than enough to warrant conviction and removal if we had any GOP Senators with integrity.
Go quote some more rap songs Melber, seems to be what you are good for these days.

(51,675 posts)I can't take his constant musical references. A few were tolerable at first, now it is just annoying (and I like musuc).

(109 posts)with Ari Melber. Saying it was happening too fast. Ari is out, in my book.

(54,770 posts)some rationale that it should have played out through courts.
For what it's worth, every other person -- Matthews, Hayes, McCaskill, Wiley -- said they disagree.

(11,760 posts)Obstruction of Congress though charged separately IS an abuse of power. Refusing the subpoenas and testimony of cabinet staff is taking the power of Congress granted in the section on Impeachment unto himself. That is abusing power.
Ari has been listening to Dershowitz too much recently.

(102,583 posts)convict. He did not say that on the Abuse of Power charge.
I disagree with him (as did Maya, Chris Hayes, and Claire) as I do likewise agree that the obstruction charges are an extension of the abuse of power. It would be hard to have obstruction without documented abuse of power, the reverse does not necessarily apply. Academically, Ari can argue the RW meme that the Dems had not exhausted all court avenues for documents and testimony, but in real application, that is bullshit.

(1,533 posts)I have heard a couple of commentators say they should have gone through the courts to enforce subpoenas. Ari said something similar. And I agree he is WRONG.
Congress is a COEQUAL branch of government. They have unfortunately given away much of their own inherent powers to the other two branches. Powers such as much of the war powers, and directly enforcing inherent contempt for defying subpoenas.
Yes, the congress has recently gone through the courts to enforce subpoenas, but they have the constitutional right to enforce them by sending out someone from the Sgt at Arms to pick up a subject with guns and cuffs, or to impeach a government official for defying subpoenas.
Including the President.
