Chinese embassies have urged citizens travelling overseas to comply with airport health checks put in place in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

It comes after a woman from Wuhan – the central Chinese city where the outbreak began – posted photos of herself at a restaurant in France on social media, saying she had been feeling ill when she travelled to the country so she evaded temperature screening at the airport.

15. Yes, I remember pictures back from the SARS era

in the early 2000s - after being criticized for reacting too slowly in the beginning, the Chinese government essentially shut the entire country down - I remember pictures of deserted streets in Beijing, Shanghai, etc that are normally teeming with thousands upon thousands of people.

My wife is originally from China and it was not long after we got married, so it stuck in my mind.

China virus: five cities locked down and Beijing festivities scrapped

Chinese authorities have imposed lockdown measures on five cities in an unprecedented effort to contain the outbreak of deadly new virus that has made hundreds of people ill and spread to other parts of the world during the busy lunar new year travel period.

Authorities banned transport links from Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, on Thursday morning, suspending buses, subways, ferries and shutting the airport and train stations to outgoing passengers. Later in the day, the nearby central Chinese cities of Huanggang and Ezhou announced similar measures. Travel restrictions were also placed on the smaller cities of Chibi and Zhijiang.

Starting at midnight, long-distance buses, the rapid transit system, and train station in Huanggang would be shut, according to a notice from the local government. Cinemas, internet cafes, and other entertainment venues would all stop operating. Residents should not leave the city, except for “special reasons”.
