he chooses with absolute, unmitigated impunity. What do you think he'll do? Besides bribing and extorting every other foreign government on the planet to intervene on his behalf in the 2020 election?

(9,245 posts)I truly believe he will do this and that it will be one of the first things he does, enshrining himself as King until he dies or steps down.

(4,533 posts)I remember Republican CA Governor Pete Wilson won re-election by smearing undocumented workers. But it tarnished the Republican Party leading to their death in California. I am convinced Trump will also tarnish Republicans so that they will die as a national party. Trump is fifty fifty to get re-elected at Predictit. Betting markets are reasonably reliable. But soon a heavy rain will wash the scum away. The youngest 40% of eligible voters favor Dems to Repubs almost two to one. That is a huge margin, bigger by far than any I have ever seen. Pew tracking shows they are not getting more conservative as they age. In 20 years Trumps grandchildren will be in court houses seeking to legally change their last names. Yes, judges. But laws trump judges in the big scheme. Courts couldnt stop the FDR tidal wave tho judges tried.

(56,582 posts)Seriously. What did everybody who kept yelling at those of us who were skeptical of impeachment think was going to happen? Did anybody seriously think this doesn't end with a giant "TRUMP VINDICATED" headline, which is all most voters will take away from the whole process?

(4,377 posts)I am firmly on the side that believes he needed to be impeached to show that his behavior is still recognized as completely unacceptable, however there is still a very strong argument that when he is inevitably acquited it will make low info voters believe he was actually innocent, and may hurt us in November.
Impeachment was not an easy automatic win for us, it comes with huge risks and costs. Personally I think those are worth paying, but I absolutely respect the opinions of those who believe otherwise. Let's not impugn people's motives simply for having perfectly legitimate concerns.
