People are wrong to say that we have no heroes left.
Just as they have always been, they are all around us, choosing to do the right thing, no matter what.

Given my role here, how should i behave?

Relying on Senators to do what is appropriate may be a fools errand.

They follow voters or they followed money, whichever is more abundant. For they seek power, usually through the lobbying industry, which is 90% the conduit of money.

It's the state of nature that we live in under a big powerful country, regardless of how democratic the formal constitution of government is.

In the eighteenth century, Montesquieu philosophized on how it's difficult, if not impossible, for a very large country to be a republic. Republics depend on the citizens finding common cause under the law, having shares interests.

When a country becomes too large or diverse for people to generally feel that way, voters are too easily swayed by demagogues and others who gained power by exacerbating factions. So republics, like the United States, tend to break down over time and with growth. In our case, we're victims of our own success

Really large countries, Montesquieu says, are better governed by despots. That's why Russia couldn't keep a democracy. Despots rule through fear and greed. Even the Democratic party uses this approach when the chips are down. Even if we get rid of Trump, I think he represents our future

“And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is right.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

Thank you, Tanuki! Thank you, Sally Yates! Thanks to all in the Senate who still know right from wrong.
