before the ascendency of Newt Gingrich in the 1980s. Gingrich and Tom DeLay were pioneers in the "Democrat" pejorative smear that's lasted to this day.

She must have been given a whiff of smelling salts this morning, and woke up. After 40 years of the GOPers using the pejorative, she notices right now? What happened? Is Greenspan deteriorating?

I've never heard, nor heard of, any talking head on the teevee machinery correct anybody about Democrat -- Democratic.

used in a disparaging fashion by the party's opponents. While the term has been used in a non-hostile way, it has grown in its negative use since the 1940s, in particular by members of the Republican Party—in party platforms, partisan speeches, and press releases—as well as by conservative commentators.

There's no great mystery about the motives behind this deliberate misnaming. "Democrat Party" is a slur, or intended to be—a handy way to express contempt. Aesthetic judgments are subjective, of course, but "Democrat Party" is jarring verging on ugly. It fairly screams "rat".

confusing intellectually challenged Republicans who cannot distinguish between Big D party name and little d adjective. It avoids referring to us as people who support democracy.

I have actually had some Repubicans tell me, as if they were revealing something very profound about their party vs mine, that the US is a republic, not a democracy.

I have explained to them that the Greek term simply means rule by the people in today's general usage vs. the rule of an absolute monarch or dictator, so that we have such contradictory sounding terms as a democratic constitutional monarchy in which the people elect their leaders and representatives despite having a king or queen. A republic is a representational democracy, a government without a dictator or monarchy.

So Republicans fear the impression created by using the word "democratic," as part of our party name.

republic vs democracy back in the 1950's when he was a teen and I was in grade school. He heard it from his boss at an after school job that he had. He later became the only Republican in my immediate family (not counting a few stray Pubs in the extended family).

A couple of my high school history teachers, plus a civics teacher explained the terms in my classes. My brother apparently tuned out or missed those classes.

I was surprised to hear the claim again years later, in another town and state from various people. I guess it's a Pub talking point that keeps making the rounds among them.

Democratic then. But they did push the notion that the US is a republic, not a democracy as a mesns of claiming that the Republican party was the accurate one and that the Democratic party is therefore invalid for our system of government.

The people who initiated this foolishness knew better. Their followers often did not then and do not today see how silly and inaccurate this idea is. They really believe that they are saying something very profound and significant when they claim that we have a republic and not a democracy. They are dumbfounded when I tell them that a republic is a representational democracy.

without too terribly offending her tribe.

She worked her scrawny backside off so that HRC would never see the inside of the Oval office again, and now she is pretending to make amends by correcting Trump’s language?
Please, Mrs. G ... we won’t go up in flames when some republican doesn’t use proper grammar to purposely sound insulting. But we do get pretty hot when a “journalist” (I’m being kind) purposely tries to destroy a presidential candidate with innuendo.
