Dershowitz distances himself from White House response to Democrats' impeachment charges

Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard Law emeritus professor who recently joined President Trump’s legal team, on Sunday distanced himself from a response by two White House lawyers to House Democrats’ impeachment case against the president, noting that he did not sign on to the document.

“I didn’t sign that brief,” Dershowitz said in an interview on ABC News’s “This Week.” “I didn’t even see the brief until after it was filed. That’s not part of my mandate. My mandate is to determine what is a constitutionally authorized criteria for impeachment.”

Dershowitz is one of four lawyers who were selected personally by Trump and announced Friday as new members of the president’s legal team. The others are former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi and former independent counsels Robert Ray and Kenneth W. Starr.

Dershowitz’s comments come as both sides preview their arguments for Trump’s impeachment trial, which begins in earnest this week and is only the third such trial in U.S. history.

Both of which were covering up his own unique stink of hypocrisy.

Trump made the latest hires because he likes “star power,” said one former aide who remains close to the White House.

“Trump has hired names he knows from the headlines. That’s his comfort level. His familiar universe, if you will,” added Dan Eberhart, a major Republican donor and CEO of the drilling services company Canary, LLC. “The president is gearing up for a fight. He’s not going to go in there with people he’s never heard of.”

He has tried repeatedly to hire lawyers from the most prestigious law firms and they won't work for him - because he is infamous for not paying his legal bills, and because working for Trump is likely to deter other clients as well as the best new hires.

He can stand up to any slick fast-talking TV lawyer. He and the other managers were chosen for their skills as litigators. The list includes Jerry Nadler, Zoe Lofgren (who was involved in both the Nixon and Clinton impeachment processes), Hakeem Jeffries, Val Demings (not a lawyer but comes from law enforcement and is an excellent questioner), Jason Crow and Sylvia Garcia. I think these people will have no trouble competing with the TV lawyers.

exactly what they need. Dershowitz, arguing strongly and persuasively that there is nothing in the Impeachment that is an actual crime. How do you defend against that? All you can say is that it doesn't have to be a crime to impeach. Which doesn't have much oomph.
