What a tragedy.

(21,738 posts)- but it makes the perfect causus belli.

I believe nothing they say. If they said that grass is green, I'd look to see.
The timing is far too perfect to be a coincidence - and the Orange Goon is capable of anything.

(33,475 posts)What proof do you need? Occam's Razor. A Surface to Air missile is the most rational explanation.
It was a major fuck up, like the airliner shot down over the Donbas by Russia's proxy army. Iran isn't going to admit it now; but eventually they'll admit it to Ukraine.
Why do you think it would be used as a causus belli? We don't really need those anymore, just Presidential whims.

(21,738 posts)Keep in mind that polls show voters disapproving of the Soleimani assassination by 54 to 41 - and, just as notably, by 50 to 40 among independent voters.
This is nothing short of a sea change from what happened in the days after 9/11, when only 6% of those polled dared admit they questioned the official story in any way.
Cheeto knows this, and was thus anxious to create something that might rally voters to supporting war - and his re-election.
Bibi was just as worried about the prospect of war fizzling out. And he's no stranger to false flag attacks himself.

(29,244 posts)my understanding is that most of the people aboard the flight were of Iranian descent... even if they were citizens of other countries. Suppose the more radical of the Iranian military viewed them as cowards fleeing the potential war zone should the US retaliate...
In other words, it might not have been an accident...
The airport tower had to clear the plane to take off, it was in the air for minutes before it was likely struck by the anti-aircraft missile, how could the military NOT KNOW it was a civilian airliner?

(21,738 posts)We know the GOPee considers false-flag attacks against civilians a viable option (Operation Northwoods, etc.).
The timing is obvious, and the motive is overwhelming: This looks every bit like a justification for war.

(29,244 posts)What is the motivation again? We plant a bomb on a commercial aircraft flying out of Tehran for the purpose of claiming Iran did it so we can attack Iran?
Right AFTER Iran launched 16 or so ballistic missiles at our bases in Iraq?
We already had ample justification for war... and the way more evil plan on our part would have been to leave people at the missile strike sites (especially Iraqi soldiers) rather than what you suggest, despite the 5 hours of warning that Iran apparently gave us that these sites would be hit by ballistic missiles.
I'm not saying that my scenario is correct... but I am wondering how the Iranian military couldn't be bothered to check with the airport for commercial traffic.

(21,738 posts)The only one who can possibly benefit from this tragedy - and at such a perfect timing - is the Orange Menace (and Bibi).

(21,738 posts)Whatever may have happened, we'll probably never know the truth.
We do already know how fast Cheeto's trying to turn this into a causus belli.
If anyone benefited from this tragedy, it's him (and Bibi).

60 Canadian college students died because of Trump's wag the dog. That's a fact no matter the actual hands behind this disaster.
People are watching now, but at what point will they start to march--world wide--for this dangerous lune to be removed?
