I don't get it! How can Republicans face their children

GOP congress critter after critter stood and denied that Trump did anything wrong, that impeachment was a Dem plot, that Dems were duplicitous and unfair, that impeachment was a long-planned coup. Lie after lie after lie. And I suspect they knew perfectly well that they were lying. I simply don't get how a normal human being could so despicable. So I guess they are all just sociopaths. I swear they are all just Fascists.

The GOP has decided that their survival chances as individuals decrease if they act based upon each individual conscience. Their chances of continuing residence in D.C., they figure, are better if they mirror Trumpy's justifications, knowing that it's all a fantasy and a network of obvious lies.

It might work. There are boatloads of very stupid people who are eligible to vote, and who love to hate. The GOP is free to use them for their own gain.

Meanwhile, the fabric of the nation is in tatters. A Senate acquittal kills the Constitution. That's the kind of awesome power that rests with Senate Republicans. They can, either passively or actively, dissolve the Constitution and haphazardly create a new government based upon a Unitary Executive that lords over both the Judicial and Legislative Branches as lesser organs of government. The Executive will be able to overrule ANY decision made by the other two branches, and will have arbitrary discretion to violate any laws set forth by the Congress, or any decisions made by the Judiciary. THAT'S where all of this is headed. The principles that serve as the foundation of national government will be changed permanently, the Republican Party will become the Permanent and Dominant political party, and the people of the nation will not have any role in determining their own well being.

That's one of the very possible paths that a Senate Acquittal will render.

to which we either align ourselves to - or, assert that we are NOT THAT.
I'm not a saint - not even close - but I'd like to believe that even if I were a republican congressman in
2016 - I would have (at the very least) retired when I saw this abomination take over the party. Sure, it would hurt
me financially, but I could face my children and say "I'm loyal - but this was a step too far."

But for those that have remained, there is no center - nothing but avarice and opportunism.
