Lyin' Ryan: Clinton gave us welfare reform and Obama is trying to roll it back

By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, September 5, 3:13 PM

ADEL, Iowa — Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan on Wednesday held Bill Clinton up as a model of reform and Barack Obama as his opposite, hours before the former president’s speech to the Democratic National Convention.

Campaigning in Iowa, Ryan lauded Clinton administration action on welfare reform and spending reductions — areas where the GOP ticket has aimed some of its sharpest critiques of Obama, the incumbent Democrat.

<...>

“Under President Clinton we got welfare reform,” Ryan told an audience outside a small-town courthouse west of Des Moines. “President Obama is rolling back welfare reform. President Clinton worked with Republicans in Congress to have a budget agreement to cut spending. President Obama, a gusher of new spending.”

Two lies right there in one paragraph. Well, I suppose it's an improvement for Lyin' Ryan the race-baiter.

We already know about the welfare lie about Obama, but what about the lie that Obama is a "gusher of new spending"? Well, it just isn't true. Under Obama, annualized Federal spending growth is at its slowest pace in decades:

The fact that the national debt has risen from $10.6 trillion to $15.6 trillion under Obama’s watch makes for easy partisan attacks. But the vast bulk of the increase was caused by a combination of revenue losses due to the 2008-09 economic downturn as well as Bush-era tax cuts and automatic increases in safety-net spending that were already written into law.

Their boy Ronald Reagan was actually a gusher of new spending, not Obama.
