They KNOW theyre lying. They know Trump is lying.
They do NOT believe the idiotic conspiracy nonsense they babble about.
They are FULLY AWARE of what they are doing.
They simply dont care. Whatever it takes for them to win, they will do. They will gleefully feed the hatreds, fears, and irrational beliefs of the Republican base. They will feed the base non-stop bullshit 24/7, if thats what it takes to get these people to vote against their own interests, even against their own childrens futures.
They are enthusiastically FOR Trump and the horrible Republican programs that are so destructive and harmful to the American people. They may not like Trump as a person, and may in fact despise him. But they love Trumps racism, his hatred of uppity women, the way Trump shovels money into the pockets of the rich, the wildly unqualified right-wing nutjobs Trump is putting on the Federal bench, and the way Trump grinds the faces of the poor and sick into the ground. They get off on it, as a matter of fact.
They are not stupid. They are not spineless in bending to Trumps will. They share that will.

(45,030 posts)Demographics and public opinion are quickly moving away from them. In big significant ways. They're winning fewer and fewer elections. The only way they can really win is to totally change the game. Lie. Cheat. Distort. Extort. Whatever it takes. Bottom line, people just don't like Republicans... so they need to take the power away from the people and form authoritarian rule somewhere between mid century soviet and Kafka. Yes, they are that deplorable.

(27,820 posts)The Republicans who have supported and enabled their "pResident" are blatantly spineless. They could have reined him in at any time - when he asked Comey to ignore Flynn's corruption, when he called for a ban on Muslims, when he stood on that stage in Helsinki and declared Russia innocent of interfering in the 2016 election - despite the fact that their guilt had been proven beyond any doubt.
All it would have taken was the powers-that-be in the GOP going to Trump and telling him, "If you do THAT, we won't support you. If you do THAT, we will publicly denounce your actions. If you do THAT, we will ensure that our constituents are made aware of how the Republican party is against you."
I've no doubt there are elected Republicans who vehemently disagreed with all kinds of things Trump has done - but were too spineless to speak out.
Quite frankly, I don't know which is worse: Trump's crimes, or the fact that an entire political party went-along-to-get-along, fully knowing how absolutely insane his policies are, and continue to be.

(7,927 posts)The majority of the Senate GOP are not people whose first thoughts are for the people who elected them nor other US citizens. They are people who expect to get THEIR way by any means they want to use. On odd occasions, they will appear to be human but they are actually aliens from another dimension.
They do not oppose Trump because he gives them what they want: immunity from responsibility.
