as well as every single person who aided and abetted him.
His crimes are countless and extend well beyond the Ukraine blackmail. The list of his crimes is long, but the one I find most heinous is what he's done at the Mexican border: Family separations; Caging children; and the deaths of six children (that we know of). I would call these crimes against humanity.
Eric Holder, Barack Obama's AG, did not prosecute Bush, Cheney, et. al. for lying us into Iraq and Afghanistan which caused the deaths of over 4,000 American service people. So I guess the message was that people in high power are untouchable.
Letting Trump and his fellow thugs off the hook would be an intolerable mistake. It would let any future president know that she/he could, literally, do anything and not face any consequences.
The fear, of course, is that the next time Republicans are in control they will "take revenge" on the Democrats. In case you haven't gotten it yet, they don't need an excuse. Impeaching Bill Clinton over a bj makes that point perfectly clear. Unfortunately, the entire Republican Party cannot be prosecuted for being a disease that is destroying democracy.
But the prosecution of Trump, and those associated with him who committed crimes, is an absolute necessity. We avoid doing so at our own peril.

(42,641 posts)President Obama's decision to not prosecute was based, in my view, on the hope that the GOP would act in a bi-partisan manner for the good of the country. Obama's opinion was wrong, but he continued to hold out this hope for 8 years and over 400 filibusters.

(762 posts)It would also be a mistake to let these criminals go unpunished. The excuse that healing the country and moving on is woefully inadequate and more of a travesty.

(17,862 posts)I suspect blanket pardons for everyone ala Iran Contra but even more so. To the point I even see Trump resigning and Pence giving him a pardon as well (after already receiving one from Trump).
It appears, unless there is a sea change, they will get away with it because of the electoral college advantage.
If this doesn't happen, I agree with having a DEMOCRATIC special prosecutor going through everything including the FBI behavior in the 2016 election. The precedent has been set.
Someone should remind Barr that what he is doing is what they are attempting to accuse Obama administration officials of doing.

(15,035 posts)Trump can be tried in New York and maybe even Florida for crimes like money laundering. (Why do you think he doesn't want anyone to ever see his financials?) And many of his fellow thugs may also have committed crimes that can be prosecuted at the state level.

(17,862 posts)the Statute of Limitations is running on all those crimes. Also I wouldn't be surprised for a 5-4 out of their butts SC decision regarding double jeopardy.
Can the feds help the states in pursuing only state charges? The pardons, if nothing more, will handicap such accountability. Also if it was so clearly illegal before he became President, why wasn't it pursued then?

(15,035 posts)I wish Obama was still in the White House. But Bush/Cheney lying America into two wars is a major crime that should have been prosecuted. I'm certain that Obama agonized over doing it, but decided to not proceed.

(15,035 posts)It's totally mind-boggling how many of his associates he corrupted, or were corrupt to begin with. Either way, the orange creature is a magnet for those who are short on conscience, decency, and just plain basic humanity.
Trump is a unique disease that attracts infections of every sort. Seems that most of them are Republican congresspeople.
They keep telling us that 63 million people voted for Trump in 2016. Will that many, or close to that many vote for him in 2020? If so, I've been a total fool my entire life and this is a place in which I no longer wish to dwell.
Sixty three million people!!! Even if Dems win the 2020 election, there is an ignorance or sickness out there of which I don't want any part.
