(31,261 posts)I am in his district, it is changing fast. The Hispanic population is larger than the Black population, the two groups make up about 27% of the population. There is a pretty big Asian population and a smaller American Indian population. Whites still are the dominant group here by far and many of them come from longtime republican families. But the area has elected moderate democrats, there was a longtime Rep from here named William Chappel, my parents loved him. We also had a long time State Senator and Lieutenant Governor for Governor Lawton Chiles named Buddy MacKay who was a homeboy and well liked by everyone. The legendary democratic Governor Earl Faircloth has the large judicial complex here named after him. The republicans here romanced the teabaggers, but their history is more moderate, while the area around it was a KKK hotbed, Ocala and Marion County largely resisted that trend, thereby having the largest Black population in the area.

(33,039 posts)There should be an investigation that follows the Russian money into campaigns, going back however many years the evidence indicates.
Have GOPers been retiring because they count on the reluctance to investigate former office holders due to the appearance of political vengeance?

(70,291 posts)... in order to stop the impeachment proceedings is because so many are dirty with Russian or
other county's money and or their little secret of having dirty voting machines/elections is going
to be exposed. And I think Vlad, GOP company workers, & Brad Parscale (I'm looking @ you) used
the electronic back doors to those machines in order to flip or null out votes.

(33,039 posts)2020 needs to be a big, blue tsunami so we can (a) halt the destruction, (b) fix some damage, and (c) find out who has received foreign aid while they carry out the destruction we've witnessed. (Some of it has been extremist ideology, but we know there has been Russian money behind some PACs and individuals).

(31,261 posts)minority party. My county, in Yoho's district is a case in point. The county is around 359,000 people. The largest city, Ocala is around 69,000. But Ocala is growing faster than the unincorporated parts of the county, is is the next largest city in the county, Belleview. As the urban areas have grown the county has become more moderate politically. Yoho likely saw that trend coming at him, like republicans across the country are seeing, their reliable areas hollowing out and the urban populations that are replacing those people tend to be more moderate politically.

(31,261 posts)Maybe the northern part, which tends to be less populated and redder. The big vote count that he gets is from Marion County. I got carved into his district as Daniel Webster, who was my rep got a more favorable and more rural district. Yoho got more urban areas, including Ocala. He may not have won his last election by a wide margin. The medical industry is massive in Ocala, issues like the safety of the ACA and Medicare plays large here, our nominee needs to run hard on that. Joe Biden heading the ticket would play largely positively here and cause problems for the repugh, if we field a good nominee.
We have an impressive young woman named Cynthia Dela Rosa who is running for the State Legislature. Now that Yoho is out, I hope that she sets her sights higher and run for his seat.

(31,261 posts)Webster was given a more favorable rural district. Maybe Yoho looked at the 2020 districting map and didn't like his chances. The urban areas are growing fast in this region and are soaking up rural areas.

(82,849 posts)Daily Kos has been keeping track of Republicans deciding that they want to spend more time with their families. Numerically, it's fewer than the number of Republicans at this juncture who announced their retirement, but with fewer Republicans in office*, percentage-wise, more Republicans are getting out of government this election cycle.
*I've heard that fewer Republican office-holders might mean something, but nobody seems to know what. The will of the people as expressed at the ballot box? A change in the way people want to see the government work? Mercury in retrograde? Nobody knows!

(31,261 posts)Marion County has around 100,000 more people than Alachua County (Gainesville), I think that his district shaved off the redder parts of Alachua County, thereby increasing the power of the redder Marion County. I think that I have an idea of the people that will be running on the republican side, all are elected officeholders. To win his seat, we have to somehow split the vote in the Marion County part of the district more, a tall order since people here have only recently stopped driving around with confederate flags and decals on their vehicles. We seem to be getting a greater number of moderate people that work in the medical care industry here, but we still have a long way to go. Maybe healthcare will be a major issue in the election, if we stay with improving the ACA and don't go way left, maybe our candidate can take out the almost sure teabagger opponent that he or she will have.

(31,261 posts)Yoho seems to have moderated some since the last election, maybe it was because he got put into a more urban district, I don't know, but I did notice the change.
He was a large animal Vet before running for Congress, maybe he is going back to that, or he sees more money being part of a rightwing think tank or lobbying in Washington, none of that would surprise me, though more moderate now, he is still a scumbag.

(31,261 posts)Unfortunately there is an elected teabagger who will try to win his seat. The district is trending toward purple, but for the next few cycles, it likely stays red (I hope not, but we Dems need to convince enough Indies to back out nominee to get us past a large block of old rightwing republicans that outnumber us).
