to me that means we don't criticize anyone for using whatever they feel like carrying their stuff in (as long as text/labels/etc are not racist, vulgar, etc.)

Which, AFAIC makes the criticism (not the issue) partisan.

To a hearing this important, likely being viewed the world over? Emphatic no. Castor has been a lawyer long enough to have at least one heavy duty documents briefcase. He should use it. Showing up with grocery bag was tacky, if not intentionally insulting to the process.
