CNN: Will Michelle Obama's speech change history?

Last edited Wed Sep 5, 2012, 09:42 AM - Edit history (1)

From Gordon Stewart, former deputy chief speechwriter to President Jimmy Carter and currently moderator of TheNextDeal.org:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/05/opinion/stewart-michelle-obama/index.html

(CNN) -- If Barack Obama is re-elected on November 6, he will owe more to his first lady than any president ever to win a second term.

On Tuesday night in Charlotte, North Carolina, Michelle Obama gave one of the finest speeches ever delivered at a national political convention. More important, it could have more impact on the immediate future of the country than her husband's celebrated 2004 keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Why?

Her speech tied the Obamas' personal stories directly to the lives of millions of voters struggling not to be the first generation of Americans unable to offer hope of greater opportunities to their children than they had, thus drawing a contrast with Mitt Romney as an unnamed but unmistakable caricature of privilege without shading her talk with negativity or animosity.

In fact the overall emotion, and there was far more real as opposed to rhetorical emotion than any speech at this level in memory, was a feeling rarely conveyed in our political language today -- love.

Can you imagine your spouse asking you to address the nation on your behalf? I think I'd rather stay home, watch the kids and curl up with a good book.

And I've said all this past week is that Dems have to focus on and promote the positive that has happened the past 4 years so we can make way for the rest of the story the next 4. Yes!!

that she and her husband are millionaires. I hold no animosity towards people's wealth (especially if it's earned the old-fashioned way-- NY Times Bestseller).

But she and her husband make rich people seem down to earth and not elitist's like the RMoney's.

to humanitarian foundations. The Obamas KNOW how good they have it. Romney just thinks he's special, and everyone else, obviously, is a lazy shitbag. Thats the main difference.

The Obama's know their connection to humanity because of their involvement with communities. The right tends to say "community organizer" as if it's not worth considering as something to do. But, I've never had a rightist tell me why organizing communities to help themselves was a bad thing. This woman is special.Even when Mitt goes to another country to proselytize and convert its citizens he didn't live with the people he'd be speaking to.

I am so impressed.

I am speechless.

I have no words that could add to it.

Her speech was...
... and still is...
... perfect.

(Edit)
I was heavily moved.
I was moved almost to tears... but I am an old-school fellow, so I held them back.

But, I was also moved to donate.
And, as I am a classic geek, I contributed $314.15 to Obama.
(Maybe a geek somewhere will notice and get a small chuckle out of it. Never know.)

I'd never contributed to any campaign before.

But, Michelle nailed it.
She nailed everything.

She described the man in every man.
The woman in every woman.
The people that we all aspire to be.
And more.
And more.

Michelle Obama epitomizes what it means to be a Democrat. I am SO PROUD of her, of my Party and everything We stand for.

Democrats put that other Party to SHAME last night.

It was an awesome speech though.

Love how people seem to have forgotten how good Obama is at giving speeches himself. Michelle was awesome and I love her but Obama is still to come and if you think his follow up isnt going to be awesome well... You are likely in for a pleasant surprise.

His speech after the New Hampshire primaries was history changing.

They are an unbelievable team and the real deal. Something the plastic Romneys have no hope of ever matching.
