‘Obamacare Is A Badge Of Honor’: Dems Embrace Health Care Law At Convention

‘Obamacare Is A Badge Of Honor’: Dems Embrace Health Care Law At Convention

Sahil Kapur

Democrats have run from health care ever since the Affordable Care Act passed in March 2012, fearful of being burned by a political firestorm. At the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte Tuesday night, they weren’t running.

The opening night of the convention featured an aggressive embrace of the party’s most consequential achievement in a generation, from an emotional clip package highlighting the benefits of the law for Americans with pre-existing conditions to speeches emphatically endorsing the bill that Republicans derisively dubbed “Obamacare.”

“For us Democrats, Obamacare is a badge of honor,” said Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of Health and Human Services. “No matter who you are, what stage of life you’re in, this law is a good thing.”

“Being a woman is no longer a pre-existing condition!” she said. “That’s what change looks like.”

I know that political campaigns uniformly stress the negative as a "winning strategy", but aside from that, the many positive aspects of the ACA need to be spelled out in a manner that allows the large segment of the electorate that is less than 100% informed to get a better understanding of how they stand to benefit from its implementation. Don't make excuses for it -- instead exercise the full bragging rights, and give President Obama full credit for his leadership in making "Obamacare" happen. Then repeat the message, over and over.

And some of us are still waiting for affordable health insurance, let alone the public option that the House passed in 2009.

Ryan: Obama Using Medicare As A ‘Piggy Bank’ For Obamacare

Paul Ryan accused President Obama on Wednesday of raiding Medicare to fund "Obamacare," a common campaign attack for the Romney-Ryan campaign, at a rally in Adel, Iowa.

Ryan said that Democrats think health care reform is an "achievement."

He's right -- Democrats touted the Affordable Care Act continuously during the first night of their national convention in Charlotte on Tuesday, referring to it as a "badge of honor."
