Kristallnacht began today (11/09/1938). A precursor of things to come.

Kristallnacht | "It Came From Within" | YadVashem.org

Kristallnacht (German pronunciation: [kʁɪsˈtalna?t]) or the Night of Broken Glass, also called the November Pogrom(s),[1][2] was a pogrom against Jews carried out by SA paramilitary forces and civilians throughout Nazi Germany on 9–10 November 1938. The German authorities looked on without intervening.[3] The name Kristallnacht ("Crystal Night" ) comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings and synagogues were smashed.

Jewish homes, hospitals and schools were ransacked as the attackers demolished buildings with sledgehammers.[4] The rioters destroyed 267 synagogues throughout Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland.[5] Over 7,000 Jewish businesses were damaged or destroyed,[6][7] and 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps.[8] British historian Martin Gilbert wrote that no event in the history of German Jews between 1933 and 1945 was so widely reported as it was happening, and the accounts from foreign journalists working in Germany sent shockwaves around the world.[4] The Times of London observed on 11 November 1938: "No foreign propagandist bent upon blackening Germany before the world could outdo the tale of burnings and beatings, of blackguardly assaults on defenseless and innocent people, which disgraced that country yesterday."[9]

The pretext for the attacks was the assassination of the Nazi[10] German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan, a 17-year-old German-born Polish Jew living in Paris. Estimates of fatalities caused by the attacks have varied. Early reports estimated that 91 Jews had been murdered.[a] Modern analysis of German scholarly sources puts the figure much higher; when deaths from post-arrest maltreatment and subsequent suicides are included, the death toll climbs into the hundreds, with Richard J. Evans estimating 638 suicide deaths.[11] Historians view Kristallnacht as a prelude to the Final Solution and the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust.

I find this horrifying. I always have.

I don't want to be so naive to think that it can never happen here. Perhaps not state sponsored, but the right wing hate groups in this nation are being stirred up by republican politicians and could act out on their own. We need to keep a close eye on these groups and make sure that they are never allowed to terrorize others in society.

Today is the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass in 1938. The Nazis conducted a vicious series of attacks on German Jews, killing many, destroying and burning Jewish owned businesses, synagogues, books and sacred Torah scrolls. The next day tens of thousands of Jewish men were deported to the death camps. Less than a year later, in September 1939, the Nazis invaded Poland, setting into motion the cataclysmic events of the Shoah, sounding the death knell of European Jewry and starting WWII, the deadliest war humankind has ever experienced.

Perhaps it is fitting that this anniversary should fall the day after the election of Trump. As a nation, we clearly have not learned or internalized the lessons of the Holocaust. I suspect a good percentage of those who chose to elect such a man know nothing about the Holocaust, think it never happened or are sorry Hitler didn't finish the job.

We have just crossed a very very dangerous line and I am deeply frightened and profoundly disappointed.

As the child of a Holocaust survivor, I have always had an awareness of the precariousness of Jewish existence and our history of diaspora and persecution. Until this election cycle, I have always thought that we were safe here. Now I am not sure of that at all. Targeting Muslims is no different than targeting Jews. The Trump campaign and the alt-right universe in which he and his advisors reside echoes with hate speech aimed at blacks, Jews, Muslims, immigrants, Latinos and LGBTQ people.

We have crossed a very dangerous line at a very dangerous time in history. This isn't a reality show or a game or a joke. I have been up all night. I am sure that many sleepless nights will follow.

I can't find a bright side or silver lining. I can't even say, as Anne Frank did, "in spite of everything, I still believe that people are good at heart."

Tonight, I will attend Krisrallnacht services at our synagogue. I will recite the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead. And I will pray that I am not saying Kaddish for the soul of this country.
