(81,677 posts)That voice! Still rings out across the years!
Shit - I remember covering some low-level event where, at the end a bunch of us were outside just chit-chatting. And - SHIT! There she was, just hanging out and schmoozing. Oh Jorma! She chuckled after longtime pal and bandmate Jorma Kaukonen had earlier said something goofy. And I noticed the low-heeled boots she was wearing and realized - OMG! I have the same boots! Just in a different color. Hers were white. Mine were red. Same style, though. Cool little moment that was. We were just being gossipy girls out there.
Love you, Gracie!

(9,756 posts)And you're right: She is a towering figure in rock and a cultural icon. Hell, if she'd never done anything but "White Rabbit," I'd still love her.

(111,111 posts)I became familiar with Grace on a tour to Vietnam in '67-68 . She was the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane. Lather was a trippy song.

(22,919 posts)I saw her twice with the Airplane, both times full blown magic. The first time was in the Spring of 1970 at SUNY New Paltz, the last time was a free reunion concert in San Francisco's Golden Gate Parkin 1989. Truly powerful performances.
You know she went on to become quite the visual artist also. Here's a link to a very fitting work of hers, "Her Mistresses Voice":

(36,525 posts)That is, until the county burned her house down
Sep 17, 1993 - Grace Slick's home went up in smoke as a brush fire raced through the wooded hills of Marin County, Calif. The rock star, lead singer for Jefferson Airplane and its later incarnation as Jefferson Starship, arrived at the house soon after the fire was contained Thursday. "It was sad and very numbing," said Marin Fire Department spokesman Chris Collins, who walked through the wreckage with her. "It's a sad moment for her." Pushed by high winds, the fire burned 12 acres in upscale Mill Valley before it was contained.
It was later determined the fire was started by a ham-fisted welder repairing a fire road gate for the Marin Open Space District.
