(175,774 posts)live just in from Sudley Road, about eight miles north (or was it west?) of Manassas. I've driven or been driven up and down that road many times. But we didn't go dancing. Beautiful countryside there.
1GirlieGirl
(261 posts)And lots of history. But I don't miss the traffic!
greatauntoftriplets
(175,774 posts)Of course, I didn't drive when we went into Washington, D.C.

(5,376 posts)He was out west 'way back in the early 1800s, got set upon by some Indians, stripped naked and left to die. So...his rescuers decided to name the nearby river after him...then came a couple of towns, some fossil beds and a big dam on the Columbia River. John Day left his mark, all right--and he never got south of the Oregon border. Bit of history that I'm sure no one is remotely interested in, but thought I'd share nonetheless.

(28,822 posts)where are you? $50+ for a carton does not seem cheap to me. that's how i know that i am truly owned by my addiction; i never thought i would pay so much for cigarettes...
cbayer
(146,218 posts)I'm in Southern California in an area with very limited supplies and very high prices.
barbtries
(28,822 posts)when i got here in 2007 i was looking forward to cheaper cigs...it didn't turn out that way.
justabob
(3,069 posts)They are cheaper there. 45 a carton the last time I was there, a few months ago.
I am also owned by my addiction, but money to pay for it became an issue, so started rolling my own. I now can smoke American Spirit brand and still save money, a lot of money. One packet of tobacco for 10.81 lasts 8-9 days vs 15 dollars for three packs every two days. I highly recommend it even though it is a pain to roll them yourself. The first week of transition is hard, but since then I can't stand to smoke chemical tasting machine rolled cigs.... just fyi.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)I was just kind of making a joke. Last time I went through VA, I got some cigarettes dirt cheap. Might have been on some native land, though.
justabob
(3,069 posts)I was there a year or so ago and cigs were just as expensive as at home... which is less than a lot of places but way more than it used to be. I know it was kinda a joke, but cigs are ridiculously expensive anymore so thought I'd share what I know for the few of us smokers who are left.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)Maryland perhaps?
I have mixed feelings about them being expensive. If kids can't buy them, that's a good thing, imo.
The main reason I am an addicted smoker was the ease and price of purchase when I was a kid.
justabob
(3,069 posts)and keeping kids away, but I think smokers are so few, and society so hostile, that price isn't the #1 thing keeping them away anymore. It definitely helps, but the teenagers I know through my son all hate smoking and aren't going there at any price. You are certainly correct about the low price contributing to the addiction in years past. Attitudes at the time were a bigger contributor though (for me). EVERYone smoked, even back in the 80s. Smoking inside generally, smoking sections in restaurants, ashtrays on grocery carts, tv, movies etc... it was ubiquitous.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)Ok, I know that it bothers people, and I try to be thoughtful, but some people are ridiculous.
I was at a bar one time and went outside to smoke. I was sitting on the bench out front and there was a boy there who appeared to be about 16 or so. His mother came stumbling out of the bar and told me I had to move because she didn't want her son exposed to smoke.
She had parked her kid outside a bar where she was getting plastered but wanted me to move away from him.
I found that the height of hypocrisy.
I am a thoughtful smoker too, but it just doesn't matter what pains you take. Your bar story is a great example. Oh well. That is the way it is going to be from now on.
silvershadow
(10,336 posts)4 packs for a dollar or something ridiculous back in 1970. I was 5 years old. Did it all the time, for my Mom of course. Nowadays we would both likely be in jail for that. I'm in Indiana, and we always stopped for cigarettes in Kentucky. Even on trip last year we did, and they were a little cheaper there. But that's not North Carolina.

The road cuts right through Liberty University. You know you're deep in Falwell territory by the number of Romney signs. And you find yourself driving on the "Jerry Falwell Parkway."

Jerry Falwell Famous Quotes:
Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions
AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals
Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America
The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country
If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being
Textbooks are Soviet propaganda
The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews
It appears that America's anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men's movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening
The whole (global warming) thing is created to destroy America's free enterprise system and our economic stability
Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.
God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve
(re: 9/11 attacks) "...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."
