(12,754 posts)There's nothing he can do for her. He's not an official. He's just a politician, who has no business being in a disaster area, using her for a campaign photo op. She's much better off calling the help line than waiting for Romney to do anything for her, even if (God forbid) he were to be elected.
But this speaks volumes about him. He's just an opportunist and a gawker -- like those people who stop at the site of auto accidents to look at the victims in the street, but can't offer any help.

(4,945 posts)If he were a currently seated Democratic or Republican office holder, he could possibly be there for something other than a photo op amidst other people's misery. However, that is not the case here.

1. Express some sympathy. Something along the lines of "I'm so sorry to hear this has happened to you."
2. Ask if every one (the family) is accounted for and safe.
3. Ask if they have a place to sleep tonight.
4. Have they had anything to eat?
5. Put those staffers who travel with you everywhere to some good use. They all have phones.
I'm not even running for President and I can think of these things and many more.

(2,627 posts)offering the usual politician's hug or even a shoulder pat. As much as I did and still do detest Chimpy Bush, he knew how to spread "the love" with disaster victims. Romney appeared very uncomfortable being around hurting people - where was the kindness professed about him last week?
