Elijah Cummings’ Widow Pays Tribute to Her Husband: ‘He Worked Until His Last Breath’

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the Maryland Democratic Party chairwoman and widow of Rep. Elijah Cummings, has paid tribute to her husband following the announcement that he died early Thursday morning. Elijah Cummings, the powerful Democratic House Oversight and Reform Committee chairman and a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump, died aged 68 following complications from long-term health problems. In a statement, Mrs. Cummings expressed her love for her husband, saying he was “an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion and humility.” She added: “He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not our problem. It’s been an honor to walk by his side on this incredible journey. I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly.”

regretted deeply that the fight would have to continue on without him and he would not see its end. In this world anyway.

Why awful people live longer and people like Rep. Cummings die so young, I don’t understand.

I keep getting tears in my eyes and waves of sadness. Cummings is only 1 year older than me, so this seems incredibly young and way too soon to have him taken away. There's so much going on and we need his able leadership, but now it's missing and it just makes me really sad from the meta level to the personal one that his family is feeling right now - it's all just so sad to me.

So the massive amount of work goes on to hold Russia's bent rusty tool accountable for trying (again) to get assistance for his presidential campaign from a foreign country and extorts them to do this! I hope thoughts of "what would Chairman Cummings do?" helps guide their actions.

Salute to a true hero of the country and inspiration to all!!

Her loss is greatest, yet we all feel loss too. A truly great and honorable man. Taken too soon. I wish he could have stayed until the end of this abomination of a presidency.

This hurts. What an amazing 68 years of life this man lived, and we’re all the better for it. I hope he continues to inspire, because we need so many more people to be like him.

Throughout the whole rise of the corrupt right-wing establishment, I have been inspired by civil rights leaders like Elijah Cummings and John Lewis.

I have a picture of a young John Lewis after being beaten silly to remind me that the battles we are fighting will not be solved overnight, and we must be willing to get "beat up" over and over again, even if only psychically, until we get to justice. We MUST persist, no matter how many times they bloody our noses.

I am devastated at Mr. Cummings' death at this moment in our history. May his example give all of us the courage and the will to fight for justice and a better future for all.

We all have to be civil rights activists now.
