Among the plans still behind the curve: the Florida Department of Transportation, which has not planned for a two-foot rise in sea level, said Will Watts, chief engineer of FDOT.
He told the committee while the agency builds bridges that can sustain 100-year storms, and builds stormwater retention ponds based on 25-year storm frequency, it is just starting to try to work toward anticipating what will happen when seas rise two feet.
Jennifer Jurado, chief resilience officer for Broward County, described how the impact is already incredibly problematic.
King tides and sunny-day flooding are disrupting postal delivery in many communities, eroding utility boxes, requiring law enforcement to manage traffic corridors where flooding has closed roads, she said.

(51,432 posts)entire state. Half the cities along all coasts need to do this too. They are building one around the SF airport now. Amsterdam has been reinforcing theirs for years and years (their govt is realistic and smart).

Make the climate deniers stay. Swim or drown.

(31,261 posts)I live in Florida. We just need to retake the state from the GOP (democrats had it for a long time, but they were the Dixiecrat variety).

(4,143 posts)I admit I live in a land locked state. It just does not make sense for cities, banks or insurance companies to approve rebuilding any structure destroyed by a hurricane or storm along a coastline that will be destroyed again.

(118,022 posts)they are on higher land. So the rich are mitigating. They just can't do so as easily if everyone else is well informed. Kind of the basis of republican philosophy. The rich are selling their soin to be underwater real estate to middle class if you watch the beachside bargan shows.

Lost, as in We lost a decade, = We threw away, for the whole world, the most crucial decade in history, and now a few of us would like to take it back
paradigm shift = finally admitting what I knew all along, since Ive made hundreds of thousands in that tee hee, lost decade and can now escape the effects of what Ive done. Screw those other monkeys.
what good is it for Florida to change its policies when India and China are big producers of greenhouse gases. = I havent made quite enough for the lodge near Jasper National Park so lets not be too hasty rejoining reality. (By the way, the policies of the US are leading us to 4° up while Indias are leading to 2°. Guardian)
I think reality is going to set in and, if it doesnt, its going to hit us right in the face.
Thats a great idea: setting them in concrete up to their faces in various places in Miami Beach and letting it literally hit them in the face.

(16,616 posts)They should thank Rick Scott for playing his part in ignoring and punishing scientists who stood up for the right thing. There's a wonderful book about this topic called "Drying Up" by John Dunn.

(1,648 posts)Republicans really have.
Republicans still want to be the ones screeching NO!!!! and then fully expect for any opposition to bribe and concede everything they have to the Republicans to do what is in the National best interest or right thing.
It's kind of like the Fire Department showing up when a neighbor calls 911 as you arrive home, but the Fire Department just stands there until you start slipping each of them cash to get out of the trucks. Then the Fire Captain tells you to sign over the Deed to your property, before they put out the fire.
Yes, Republicans are that fucking ate up with squirming up Mammon's ass. Republicans are never going to do anything unless they get rewarded massive profits from it.

Plant City, FL was suffering sinkholes and the replacement of sea water into the area where fresh water existed.
There must have been some similar settlement of the ground across Florida too, with all of the water they use.
