This is a standard gaslighting technique.
Imagine if he were your significant other.
He lies and you know it. You try to retort but he says "all honest people know that's true."
This may confuse you and make you doubt what you know, since you probably think of yourself as an honest person.
It's also impossible to verify with "everyone".
If you ask for specific people who can verify, he gets angry and accuses you of attacking him.
This is what Chump does to the entire country, repeatedly.

(21,627 posts)We all have at least one acquaintance who resorts to this every time they think they can get away with it.
I have a Faux-brainwashed right-wing relative (who doesn't!) who always pulls the "everyone/every decent person knows that" line when cornered.
"Every right-winger, you mean," I remind him, "and we all know how that always turns out."
Drives him nuts - and has therefore lessened these types of discussions quite a bit, thankfully.
Their record stinks - and even they know they can't deny it (though some will still try). They don't bring up Reagan or Thatcher a lot anymore either, since they know that opens them to ridicule.
"Oh. You have to go back two generations to find a right-winger that 'worked'?"
