Canadian authorities have just revealed that someone recently stole "a massive haul of maple syrup worth up to $30 million" from a warehouse in Québec.
Police and auditors have not yet released details of exactly how much product is missing; the current word is "a large quantity."
If the thieves had somehow made off with the entire contents of the warehouse, Canada would have lost more than a tenth of its 2012 syrup harvest (3.4 million liters).
The Federation of Québec Maple Syrup Producers (three magical elves) noticed that the syrup was missing during a routine inspection of the warehouse, which is maintained as part of the world's "global strategic maple syrup reserve."

(51,076 posts)Our home place has quite a few maple trees and I used to tap them and make my own syrup. Not able to traverse the hillsides any longer so I don't do it any more. Nothing quite like your own made maple syrup.

I dare say that if the thieves "had somehow" hurled the planet Jupiter into the Sun we would have lost a really big planet.
I am going to guess that the thieves have not "somehow made off with the entire contents of the warehouse" because if that were the case then there would be less mystery about how much was missing, since the answer would be "all of it."

But they didn't.

(7,675 posts)US production is down 32% in 2012 over last year.
Value of US production was up 43% in 2012 over last year.
Value of US production in 2012 was $10,6019,000, ($10.5 Billion approx)
Value of Canadian production in 2012 was $364,549,000 ($364.6 $Billion approx)
US production in 2012 was 1,908,000 gal
Canadian production in 2012 was a whopping 10,981,000 gal, 9,245,000 from Quebec alone.
US prices range from $35 gal to $73 gal in the New England area, $35 gal in Vermont and $73 gal in Connecticut.
The Montreal heist represents 10% of 2012 Canadian production.
My theory is that the Montreal maple syrup heist went over the border, maybe months ago. You can bet the Montreal and US mobs are behind it because it's such a sweet deal (sorry).
As we see there is big money to be had and the only thing illegal about it is that it was stolen. Relabel the product and create some fake invoices and you are clean as a whistle.
Sorry to break the levity of the thread but I was curious about the money involved. See here for more than you ever wanted to know about maple syrup.
