(6,819 posts)children. Immigration and Naturalization (INS) now known as ICE was said to be paying $50 bounties for undocumented families turned in. A mother working in a factory heard the raid, ran up a ramp to a mezzanine and toward an exit. She ran out an unsecured door -- into thin air. She died. She had two small children. It was devastating for family, neighbors, and their school community. The principal sat all staff down and said words I still remember: "We are teachers. We are here to build relationships and educate children by connecting with them and their families. We are NOT La Migra (term used in Spanish speaking communities for INS). The legal status of our students is not our concern. We teach. Let's get to it."
There was resounding silence. Then applause.

(32,695 posts)of the statements bring up the harmful, hateful slurs from trump. So everyday, for example, the Mexican American students will be forced to see their cultural background listed side by side with the toxic words "rapist" and "drug dealer." That's not OK nor is it appropriate for children. It doesn't matter that the word "not" is there. That's not how the brain works.
A better idea would be to address each group but then use the message that was addressed to "all" the students.
