One of the theories that's floating around about those forest fires in Brazil is that Brazilian farmers are using the slash and burn method to create more farmland for soybeans. Thus, replacing completely, China's need for U.S. soybeans.
What do you think? I think it's a possibility, given that Brazil has already capitalized on China's tariffs on U.S. soybeans. Burning up the rain forests will drive many species of plants and animals into extinction, and accelerate climate change. But will it also drive U.S. soybean farmers into extinction?

They need to make that shortfall up somewhere. Brazil and Russia are two prime sources which might be able to pick up the slack.

(19,976 posts)I'd like to see a timeline that includes Dump's tariffs, U.S. farm exports to China, Bolsonaro's campaign platform, Bolsonaro's election, etc. Did Bolsonaro perhaps see a big economic opportunity and green light the burning of the rainforest to scale up trade with China?
