A former Houston police officer was hit with murder charges after allegedly lying to justify warrants for a January drug raid that killed two people and wounded five officers, prosecutors announced on Friday.
Former narcotics officer Gerald Goines allegedly fabricated information in order to obtain search warrants on the belief suspects in a home were dealing black-tar heroin. The raid resulted in a shootout that killed the house's two occupants, Dennis Tuttle, 59, and Rhogena Nicholas, 58.
Goines was charged with two counts of murder, while former partner Steven Bryant was charged with tampering with a government record, Harris County prosecutors said.
"Under Texas law, if, during the commission of one felony, in this case tampering of a government record a person commits an act clearly dangerous to human life ... that causes the death of another, in his case two deaths, it's first degree murder," Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.

(7,538 posts)This has long been an all too common problem there. Falsified evidence to obtain warrants...dozens have died in mistaken address drug raids in Houston in the last couple of decades.

(38,421 posts)So, in their own certainty, they lied about everything. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, is taking a stand where no one has stood before, and charging Goines with murder. As a cop with a lot of years in, this narcotics officer, felt he could lie and kill and get away with it. He was sure in my opinion.
I found this information in an article about this story:
"Following the shooting, prosecutors began reviewing more than 2,000 cases tied to Goines and Bryant. In June, prosecutors said their investigation has grown into a probe of 14,000 cases handled by the Houston Police Department's narcotics division.

Therefore, these two had been involved with other narcotics cases (2000) and never had to answer to anything. So, the two bully cops are likely to see some jail time. In my opinion, their jail time, if that happens will not be pleasant.
