In conference call this afternoon, Pelosi told House Democrats, the public isnt there on impeachment," but repeated what she has said before about how growing clamor for it among members gives her "leverage." "If & when we act, people will know he gave us no choice."

It's Pelosi's duty to hold the public hearings that will force media coverage. She needs to lead.
Maybe the public would be "there" if the Democrats actually made the case for impeachment.

I am glad Nadler is pushing for more evidence and 130+ Dems want an inquiry as well as the majority of Dem supporters.

(5,376 posts)Any one who mentions that 25th amendment has no clue what it entails. First it would require Pence and a majority of his cabinet to declare him incapable to serve as president. That would never happen. And even if it were, guess what happens next? Trump just has to declare he is fit, and he remains president. Then it has to go to Congress, where 2/3 of both houses have to declare that he is not fit. This is an even higher threshold than impeachment. And this process doesn't involve hearings, which is the reason people give for moving forward with impeachment even if it is guaranteed to fail in the Senate.
Do you now see the many problems with invoking the 25th amendment? The 25th amendment was written to cover when a president is incapacitated. Nancy is well aware of this, which is why she never mentions it.

(6,231 posts)You're afraid the Senate will shitcan the idea and you and other Democrats will look like fools. And T will "win," so to speak. And you don't want that to happen with an election coming up.

(1,255 posts)in October. Pelosi wants to get the legal challenges out of the way before starting impeachment. Which makes sense to me.
