Washington (CNN)Two former top FBI officials deny former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne's claim that the FBI directed him in the summer before the 2016 election to pursue a "romantic relationship with Maria Butina," the Russian woman who was accused of seeking to win influence in powerful Republican circles at the behest of her country's government.
The claim was made in a live, 30-minute -- and at times bizarre -- interview on CNN Thursday, the same day that Byrne resigned from his company. He quit days after issuing a press release invoking claims of a "deep state," which prompted a steep stock market fall. News of his resignation saw a rebound.
It has not been verified by the agencies, and spokespeople for the Justice Department and FBI declined to comment. Reached Thursday evening by CNN, Comey called Byrne's claim "ridiculous."

Byrne drew attention last week after releasing a statement claiming he was part of federal investigations related to the 2016 election. In the press release titled Overstock.com CEO Comments on Deep State, Byrne referred to federal investigators as the Men in Black in referencing investigations relating to political espionage and the rule of law.

(1,124 posts)Donald Trump falsely accused former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of giving away U.S. uranium rights to the Russians and claimed without evidence that it was done in exchange for donations to the Clinton Foundation. The alleged deal supposedly allowed Rosatom, the Russian nuclear energy agency, to acquire a controlling stake in Uranium One, a Canadian-based company with mining stakes in the Western United States.
Had the King of Kingpins Don been better educated, he would have falsely accused Clinton of selling much more valuable Plutonium, instead of unrefined Uranium, which Russia has access to in abundance.

(58,785 posts)conspiracy that was debunked completely by many huge, reliable sources, including in great detail by a prominent Fox anchor who was offended by its ridiculousness, but that was nevertheless enthusiastically embraced by both our right and Putin's, and many anti-Democrat leftists, especially the Hillary-deranged.
The ruthless R-L alliance that spread and embraced whatever lies it took to defeat Democratic Party plans for national healthcare, minimum wages and labor empowerment, affordable education, individual civil rights, sustainable energy and climate action, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. And still does.
Derangement, all right.

(58,785 posts)in the courts? Several tribes sued in one case, plus other entities in others to stop it, and I can't find where a decision on Trump's ability to undo the protections created by the Bill Clinton and Obama administrations has been handed down. ??
Whatever Hillary this nonsense is is asinine, but while we look forward to those idiots dying off of course what matters is protecting this area.

(58,785 posts)or 4-wheelers and dirt riders for that matter.
My husband was a dirt rider in the California desert and mountains, rode with world-class riders, but he's very strongly for protecting the heritage, although conflicted on on environmental concerns. I keep reminding him that the numbers of recreational riders tearing up our wilderness have exploded since he was young and damage become extreme. He's also reached an age where he thinks candy bars should still cost 50 cents and is not interested in recalibrating to reality.

(34,661 posts)you got a hand and a half full. We are planning on doing the Bears Ears again in October. And yes,the Rancher and his Spouse are a real trip if you know what I mean. She was appointed as the one whom will determine the final Acreage of Bears Ears. She and Her Hubby have the Master Grazing Rights to most of the Monument. So this story is not going away anytime soon.
And the State of Utah's number one Industry is Tourism and boy have they messed that up.

As Heard on Fresh Air by National Public Radio
Four years after Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Tim Weiner published Legacy of Ashes, his detailed history of the CIA, he received a call from a lawyer in Washington, D.C.
"He said, 'I've just gotten my hands on a Freedom of Information Act request that's 26 years old for [FBI Director] J. Edgar Hoover's intelligence files. Would you like them?' " Weiner tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "And after a stunned silence, I said, 'Yes, yes.' "
Hoover started amassing secret intelligence on "enemies of the United States" a list that included terrorists, communists, spies or anyone Hoover or the FBI had deemed subversive.
Later on, anti-war protesters and civil rights leaders were added to Hoover's list.
"Hoover saw the civil rights movement from the 1950s onward and the anti-war movement from the 1960s onward, as presenting the greatest threats to the stability of the American government since the Civil War," he says. "These people were enemies of the state, and in particular Martin Luther King [Jr.] was an enemy of the state. And Hoover aimed to watch over them. If they twitched in the wrong direction, the hammer would come down."
