Xi has way more control over how Chinese companies behave than Trump does over American companies, and way more control over the media/what the people see/hear.

Add to that that Trump is focused on the next headline, next news cycle, next poll and Xi is not (but does care about China's long-term strategic economic position)... even if Trump was only half as dumb he'd still be in a weak position, and be getting his butt handed to him in this type of fight. The fact that Trump is a dumbass takes this from inevitably bad to abject disaster.
