We can find ways to show them that they, too, have skin in the game. As for Trump voters, they can rot.

(36,108 posts)I agree, but you hardly see our elected representatives try to do anything about voter suppression, gerrymandering, etc
Perhaps in the rarefied DC air the thought of more rabble...

(11,566 posts)I also think we cant afford to give up on the non-voters. I believe there is enough creativity and ingenuity to find multiple ways of getting non-voters to register and vote. With so much at stake, its worth the effort.

The rot - the stink - is very wide and very deep.

(3,435 posts)Forget reublican voters, let them wallow in hate. Also, I'm skeptical about never trumpers--they talk a good anti-trump game, yet can't trust them., can't count on them. Your right, getting out the vote by focusing on those that opted not to vote in 2016; as well as registering new voters is critical in 2020; Getting out the vote campaign worked for us in 2018, I remain hopeful that 2020 will be a win for our democratic candidate.

Turnout
2012 Obama: 65.9m
2016 Clinton: 59.1m = -6.8m
2012 Romney: 60.9m
2016 Trump: 59m = -1.9m

Projections from the United States Elections Project show that there were 231,556,622 Americans eligible to vote, but 138,884,643 voted. That means that 40 percent didnt vote, while 60 percent did. The voter turnout will likely increase as the popular vote continues to be counted.

(21,148 posts)She has brought into the both sides are equally bad because she doesnt want to piss anybody off so she doesnt vote. How can I get someone like that to the polls? She is convinced Repukes and the Democratic Party are equally corrupt. Her brother( my husband) has a hard time talking politics with her without losing it.

(11,566 posts)There is no equivalent, moral or otherwise, to Nazis openly marching in our streets, kidnapping children at the border and locking them in cages or private citizens raking in hundreds of millions of dollars running concentration camps. There has never been an equivalent to a president who openly brags about sexually assaulting women. It may be helpful to find out whats issues are most important to her and gently remind her that when she doesnt vote, shes giving the person she doesnt agree with two votes. People who are discouraged or scared often shut down. It must be especially disheartening for her to have children who are Trumpers. If you can let her know she is important and her vote is important, she may come around. To paraphrase, evil triumphs when good people do nothing. Democracy cant succeed if people dont vote. Good luck.

(33,345 posts)there are millions and millions who don't vote for more prosaic reasons:
Can't get to the polls, have to work
"Too busy" (not busy, just spaced)
Apathy
Don't know how to buy a stamp

(396 posts)It has to be someone who appeals to them on issues. I don't think everyone running is equipped to do that because they don't connect with voters on issues like healthcare, climate change, criminal justice, etc. Politicians have to inspire folks to turn out. That's what Obama did in 2008 and 2012. It's a mix of charisma and policy appeal. Obama ran on changing the system in 2008 and that resonated with people after 8 years of a corrupt Bush administration.
There are only a handful of Dems running in 2020 who have that. Some are openly against changing things too much. That's not a winning strategy in my mind.

(21,566 posts)Give people the option to just check I dont wish to cast any votes on their ballot and leave the rest blank, but require everyone to do so.
Youd basically need some sort of nationwide absentee mail in ballot system to make this work and/or more voting days since it isnt fair to expect people who CANT make it to vote on Tuesday to be fined.
But I bet if you actually sent those 90 million a ballot at least half of them would fill out votes on it.

(11,566 posts)I think many voters feel invisible. Letting them know that they matter, their vote matters and keying into issues that matter to them works. Also not enough is said about the fact that democracy only exists if the citizens vote and explains the calculated efforts with voter suppression. Its all hands in deck for the 2020 election. Otherwise, it may very well be our last.

(22,574 posts)How many voters on the Left bough into the Big Lie in 2016?
The one that said it didn't matter if you voted for Clinton or not because she and Trump were just the same. I wonder how many would defend their non-choice now?
I'm reading the excuses for a Democratic loss already: gerrymandering (how do you gerrymander a presidential election?), voter suppression, Russian interference. But come election day, if you have not yet voted, going to cast your ballot is the only thing left within your power to do.
After what Trump has done to this nation, how can any sane person claim their vote makes no difference, that the candidates are just the same?
