Maureen Dowd: In the age of Trump, there is no more stupid proposition than that Nancy Pelosi is the problem. If A.O.C. and her Pygmalions and acolytes decide that burning down the House is more important than deposing Trump, they will be left with a racist backward president and the emotional satisfaction of their own purity.

(90,824 posts)I am a Democrat. I am a Liberal. I worked for Senator Eugene McCarthy's presidential campaign in 1968. My political party is composed of fallible human beings, but gets more things right than wrong.
When I see the "Progressives" going the way of the Greens in terms of losing vitally important elections to the GOP, that's where I get off the crazy-train and go back to first principles: I am a Democrat. I am a Liberal.
Steve Schmidt (former R) is right: the Republican Party has gone rotten to its core and must be not just defeated but expunged.
This is a war, and Nancy Pelosi is one of our most valuable generals. When she says to her troops (the only ones she has, the House Dems) that if they have a problem they should come talk to her personally and not go tweeting all over the place like Trump, she is right. If the House cannot show public unity, we all lose, and lose bigly.

(6,551 posts)I'm hoping that Barack and Michelle Obama are considering a frank and very private intervention with AOC and the Squad.
To me, the only thing that matters is beating Trump. And running on Medicare for All, free health care for all illegal immigrants, and free college for all - with no feasible idea for how to achieve any of it - is a sure guarantee of defeat.
We must win the battleground states. That means winning the undecideds and independents. Who among them is going to buy this?
Medicare for All means losing your own doctors. Not a problem for many of us, but it scares the holy Jesus out of many of those voters.
Some young people vote. But surely not as often as those over 40 years of age. We must convince the older voters. This isn't the way to do it.
This column really hasn't age well.
