The internet may have wanted a Black Bond, or a female Bond, but it looks like were getting both. And neither.
Lashana Lynch has been tapped to play the new 007 in the upcoming Bond 25 film, the Independent reports. While Lynch, who recently played Maria Rambeau opposite Brie Larson in Captain Marvel, will reportedly be playing the new agent 007, the character James Bond is still expected to be portrayed by Daniel Craig.
There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M [played by Ralph Fiennes] says, Come in 007, and in walks Lashana who is Black, beautiful, and a woman. Its a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but hes been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman, an insider told the Daily Mail.
This means that while Lynch will be taking on the agent number 007, James Bond is still Bond. Bond is expected to be in retirement at the start of the events of the upcoming film, essentially making the coveted agent number 007 open for Lynchs taking.

(5,094 posts)He declined. But I am happy to see a woman be 007. I haven't watched a Bond film in years. I might start watching again if the storyline is good.

(22,147 posts)didn't stem from specifically wanting to develop a female character as part of a feminist effort to widen the reach of comics. In that case, it makes little sense for her not to be a woman.
When it comes to Lady Macbeth, theaters routinely change the settings, trappings, genders, races and other indicators in Shakespeare. In that example, making Lady Macbeth a man would be radical, but would not fundamentally change the character. On the other hand, it would occlude some of what's important about Lady Macbeth -- the fact that she, a woman, is more ruthless than her husband.
In both of these examples, the fact that the characters are female are important to understanding their motivations and story arcs. James Bond being male isn't. It's interesting to think about what characters could be switched from female to male without losing too much of the character/arc, because many female characters are female precisely because the writers were trying to expand representation.

(3,622 posts)Aren't going to care whether 007 is a female..
In fact 007 has always been the real character...
Smart, suave, sophisticated, deadly and polished.
No reason that role can't be played by a black female...
007 though must be played by someone with an English/British accent...won't work any other way...
